I'm seriously thinking about starting violin and am looking around at teachers/violins etc. The only thing is, I haven't yet found a teacher and I don't know anyone who plays the violin at any standard so I'm a bit stuck as to what sort of violin to get and where to get it from etc.

Does anyone have any good recommendations as to model types etc.? I'm looking for a cheap but good model, not too flashy but that doesn't sacrifice quality for being cheap. I have no idea where to start! I thought about second-hand/hiring as well, but again I'm stuck on which places sell good quality second hand violins.

Can anyone help?

What's your price range? (apart from "as little as possible" which is the usual answer to that question?) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Well then the usual culprits are the Prima 200 and Stentor 2. Of course there are lesser known options that are better value but forum rules are strict.

I've heard the Elida Serenade is quite good, you can probably find it using Google (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif).

I can heartily recommend Elida trading for quality instruments and quality advice, though I have only played their higher end ranges (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I could do that. My daughters got one of their student models and it's really good.
