I have my G6 theory exam tomorrow, and need some last minute help.
I have learnt about Non-Harmony notes already, but i just need a list of types of Harmony notes. I was looking through the past papers and came accross some questions. So i need this help, please! |

Maybe this would be better in the theory forum?
I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by harmony notes, though I haven't done grade 6 theory so I don't know! Do you mean things like the dominant, tonic and subdominant? Good luck with your exam by the way, I'm sure it will be fine! |

I have my G6 theory exam tomorrow, and need some last minute help. I have learnt about Non-Harmony notes already, but i just need a list of types of Harmony notes. I was looking through the past papers and came accross some questions. So i need this help, please! For Grade 6 you need to know the following: 1- Harmony note - Note which belongs to the chord and appears ON the beat (on stronger beats). 2 - Subsidiary Harmony Note - Note that belongs to the chord on the weaker beats of the bar - OFF BEAT 3 - Unaccented Passing notes - A note between 2 harmony notes, doesn't belong to the chord and is on the WEAKER beats of the bar. 4 - Accented Passing notes : A note between 2 harmony notes, doesn't belong to the chord and is on the STRONGER beats of the bar. Auxiliary Notes: Kind of like the middle note of a mordent - e.g. if A B A was written on a stave, "B" would be the auxiliary note. And it would also be and upper auxiliary note 5 - Upper Auxiliary Notes: e.g. A B A on a stave, it is always one step up: Principal note, Note Above, Principal note 6 - Lower Auxiliary Notes: e.g. A G A on a stave, it is always one step down: Principal note, Note below, Principal note Auxiliary notes can be accented or unaccented.......(REMEMBER) The Cambiata - Principal note ==> 1 step down ==> a leap of a 3rd DOWN ==> 1 Step Up e.g. D C A B The Cambiata would be "C" The Echapee - Principal Note ==> A step UP or DOWN ===> Then a Leap into the opposite direction to a harmony note!!!!!! e.g. B C A "C" is the echapee Hope this helps--- i HIGHLY recommend you buy ANNA BUTTERWORTH's "Harmony in Practice" It is a great thick text book,, full of everything -- and i mean everything!!! I forgot these:::: Note of anticipation : usually found before a cadence....e.g in a dotted crotchet, and a quaver,, the quaver would be the anticiaption note. It is usually a dissonance. Appogiatura -- same as an accented passing note....almost... if you write accented passing note in an exam, you will still get the mark... |

Well, I had my Grade this morning. And, i feel as if the exam was made for me.
I got the Paper S. Let's take a closer look at the questions: 1) Melody Harmonization - I chose part B which was to accompany a melody by Telemann. Very simple melody in mostly crotchets and minims. Some quavers as the beginning. 2) SATB or Keyboard - I chose keyboard. A rather interesting question it was, a little stange but still good. 3) Composition - This part I feared before the exam, but my fear went away as I saw there was an option for Violin. The opening was simple and uncomplicated theme by Haydn. So i continued it, and it was good. 4) Quite well done, the normal answer questions based on an extract. There was a piano and violin extract. Some simple questions. 5) Also simple. There was an extract for Strings, voice and some other instruments. Quite simple. All in all, i feel the exam was well done and i look forward to getting my results. Thanks to everyone who helped me before! |
