Today I'm looking into what string instruments need - in terms of notation of articulation.
My teacher told me to look at string quartet music - which I have and found that violins and violas can play two or more notes at once (!). This lead me to Wikipedia and I found out about drones, double stopping - and what notes each string plays (important when writing double (or more) stops). Next I hunted for string music notation examples and found this site - http://www.vsl.co.at/en-us/70/3189/3190/5621.vsl - which I think will be useful in future. I'm considering getting a couple of lessons with a strings teacher to talk about the possibilities for composition. Does anyone have further suggestions about what to find out about when writing for string instruments? |

Does anyone have further suggestions about what to find out about when writing for string instruments? That gives you a good list to get started. Just reading it doesn't tell you is what these methods do to the sound, so you need to get your expert to demonstrate. In particular, you should know the sounds of the two pizzicati, harmonics, mutes, tasto and ponticello playing, and the effect of playing high notes on a low string (this is particularly effective on the violin). |

If it's for an exam, putting bowing marks in will also get you more marks
