I hope I know my students and every exam period I make a forcast on what students will get ( without telling them!); always they are,on average, a couple of marks out from the actual result, which I consider very precise abd very fair. Well done ABRSM, you are SO CONSISTANT, which is what students need.

A year ago everyone I had doing an exam was about 5 marks below what I'd expected. The common factor was that nobody liked the piano, which they all said had no dynamic range whatever (most of them had negative comments about, surprise, dynamic range).

A couple of weeks ago everyone was about 15 marks below what I'd expected. The examiner - who I was told was a very nice man - turned out to be the most savage marker I've ever heard of.

If they all played as they can play, and do play in lessons, I'd be within a couple of marks each time too. Unfortunately, other factors almost always come into the equation! Be it a shoddy piano, nervous student, cold hands, mental blocks....the list goes on...

I had an examiner like that a few years ago. He was one of the nicest blokes you could meet... then I got my result! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Still passed though, so it was alright.

Have you read the thread on Teachers about unfair exam results and how inconsistent people think examiners are? You'll have a right laugh...

Nice to see someone talking sense!

On the whole I agree with the first posting as most of the time I can predict within a few marks what the pupils will get. However, I've also had the experience with a 'nice' examiner who downmarked my pupils by about 10 marks, so we still get surprises! Sometimes this can do us good though however unfair it may seem, as it would be easy to become too complacent. Probably best to work people with a view to having these 'nice but savage' examiners, although they few and far between thank goodness!

From another aspect, there was this tiny, young grade 5 piano kid who was always very bad in lessons.
He was unbelievable during his exam and got a distinction. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I usually get it about right, whatever the board; however, I'm much more likely to underestimate a mark slightly rather than the other way round.

wouldn't say i can prdict a mark but can always tell if i have passed or failed and if it is a good pass or just cscraped a pass. have never been wrong yet even when i failed grade 6 everyone said i was being pesimistic until the results came through and i had actually failed.

I find that often it's the examiners who seem really nice who mark really harshly, and the one's who seem unfriendly who mark generously! This doesn't always work, though. Due to this, I never have a clue how I've done until I get my mark!

I have to say, looking back on what I wrote on the VO board after my exam and comparing it to my marks breakdown, it's about right (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) and also the examiner was lovely, really tried to put me at ease and apparently said 'Good playing' to my organ teacher after I'd left (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) so I don't think you can say that all nice examiners mark harshly. But there does seem to be a bit of a trend.
