I was just wondering whether you thought it was worth doing Grade 6 theory. I did my Grade 5 theory exam about a year and a half ago, and passed with 90. However, my piano teacher told me that it probably wasn't worth my while doing any other theory. My theory teacher said that I could study the other grades and he wouldn't put me in for exams if I didn't want to do them. I would love to study music at a university when I leave school, so would it put me in a better position to study the theory that will be given at the university?
Sorry, I'm rambling a bit, so I'll stop there! Thank you! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

I wanted to study grade 6 theory, and like you, I was told it was a waste of time; but that was because I had no intentnion of doing music past GCSE (I'll carry on with my clarinet, but avtual school music lessons will go). But I still dip in and out of it and really enjoy some of it, but other parts I find a real struggle! I think it would be useful, but not essential, to have if you want to do music at uni. If you want to do it then it's worth it.
I did the later theory grades because I wanted to, no other reason. |

I'm studying grade 6 theory because I enjoy it - I havn't decided yet if I'm going to take the exam or not. If you want to study music at uni I think it's probably a good idea (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It might not be essential to get onto the uni course you want but if it's relevant it will give to the edge over the next candidate who might otherwise be equally qualified.

Thank you for your advice. I am still deciding what to do, but I am leaning more over to 'Do the theory' because I really quite liked it! Thank you again (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Most of what is covered in those grades we did at A-level so it would have been redundant to have done them both.

I'm doing higher theory grades for that reason - I wantto be ahead when I get to A level! Also, I quite like it. Go for it, you've nothing to lose!

I had to do grade 8 theory so I could go directly into 3rd year at Uni after I have done my ALCM. But no one, even in 4th year has a scooby about grade 8 theory, its really quite bizarre, they know alot more about history of music than theory of it.

When I applied to go to Uni, they told me to try and do my grade 8 theory as it would be very useful for my course.
(Still have'nt found the time to do it yet though!) |

Hello, I'm new to this forum and have been reading people's comments with interest. I am wondering whether to embark on some of the more advanced theory grades; I did grade 5 a long time ago (back in the distant 70s!), got to grade 8 in two instruments and started a music degree but gave it all up 25 years ago. Now I am learning a new instrument and finding it far more interesting and rewarding this time round. I am considering a theory exam as a way of 'catching up' after the long gap. Any comments welcome!

Although not essential the upper grades in theory will give you a much more solid knowledge in music and theory in general. Yes you will find a considerable difference in standard from Grade 5 - the syllabus is quite different - it will be very rewarding beneficial for you. Also if you do decide to study at uni this will give you a fantastic headstart. I myself never did theory exams - only theory for my ALCM. I was lucky that our school covered many of the aspects of the syllabus from G6-8 and also my teacher had covered much with me also.
I would always encourage my students to continue on with their studies in theory if possible. If you enjoy theory - you will get a buzz out of it. |
