I just wondered what was the usual weight for a viola bow. Mine always strikes me as being rather light (I ought to weigh it...) and when I have tried bows belonging to other people they always seem heavier (and easier to play with). Just wondered...

I believe it's between about 68 and 74 grammes. (I want to weigh mine now and find out what it is, but it's packed away - in process of moving house shortly). What does yours weigh Willobie?

They are normally about 65 -75g but they can be even heavier than this.

I have been trying different weight bows out recently and have found that it is easier to get a good tone with a heavier bow rather than a lighter one but that it is much easier to do certain types of bowing with a slightly lighter bow. I think you just have to try out several to find out what suits you best. I was surprised how much difference a few grams makes. I found that the balance of the bow is very important as well.
