Hi,
over the last few days I've been getting terrible pains and cramps in my right hand. I'm currently wearing a wrist support but it's still very painful. I practice my flute for between 2 and 4 hours a day, I know it's a lot but I just love it so much and apparently I hold my right wrist in a slightly wrong position so I'm trying to work on improving that as it may solve my problem. I was just wondering if anyone had any other advice on how to strengthen my hands, I also broke my little finger on that hand a couple of years ago and it's given me trouble ever since. Any advice would be appreciated (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'm going away to New York later on today so I won't be able to practice for a week, which at the moment is probably the best thing for me!

If your hand is hurting then don't play the flute, it'll make it worse.

Maybe go to the doctors incase you have RSI or tendonitis?

Your best bet is asking your teacher what/how to do/practise and if he's a teacher worth his salt, he shd be able to tell you how to practise correctly without injuring yourself in any way in the future.

You will also need to consult your doctor and you may be referred to a physio as well. The latter is very good for practical advice on recovery and prevention.

Good advice there from Nicki. If it's still bad after your week off, go and see your GP. It could be anything, but it's hard to tell over the Internet and an informed diagnosis sooner rather than later will help avoid long-term damage.

I had RSI a few years ago, thankfully been okay since. Stay away from anything with rapid, repetitive strain as much as you can - computer keyboards, flute, piano, writing. If you do absolutely have to write, and you're right-handed, see if a pencil feels more comfortable - it was for me.

Sorry to hear about that - it definietly sounds as if you may be using your poor hand a tad too much - the week in New York will prob do you the world of good - lucky you {going to NY I mean - not the hand}

I def think a trip to the doctor upon your return may be a good idea and talk to your teacher also.

Good luck!

The Alexander Technique might help. It would be good if you are able to see a doctor who specialises in musician injuries as well.

Yes, go and see a doctor.
I had wrist problems in September last year, which wound up in me not being able to play for 5 months - not to scare you, just to say that if you want to talk about any of it, feel free to PM me! I was a fairly extreme case I think...

Thanks for your help everybody! My hand is still hurting after my week off and I've been speaking to my A level music teacher and my flute teacher and they have both also advised me to see a doctor and maybe try the Alexander technique. I think I just need to learn my limits as to how much I can practice.

As for writing, luckily I'm left handed!

Thanks again x
