Just thought I'd mention that there's a new series starting tonight (Sunday 25th March) at 8 pm on BBC1, called Play It Again.

Celebs leave their comfort zone and take up a musical instrument with just six months to reach public performance standard.

Tonight is Jo Brand, who's embarking on the classical pipe organ.

Ok, so they've been paid to do the show and they obviously were paid enough to set aside the time the practice, but never the less, it is still a huge challenge to take on.

If anyone who is able to record this is in a position to loan or copy me tapes or discs of the series, please let me know - I'd be really grateful.

I saw this advertised and it looks interesting.
Will be watching tonight.
Love Jo Brand, I just wonder if she's as good at music as she is a comedian.

Well, there's plenty of people on this forum who've realised a hidden passion for something, ie. music, so who knows! If they volunteered to take part - and I can't imagine any were press-ganged - then I guess there must have been a deep-rooted desire within each of them to learn to play a particular musical instrument.

Although many of them will be approaching music from scratch - like many adults on this forum - I've heard that Aled Jones is going to learn to play the drums (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif).

I really enjoyed that programme. It was good to see her journey of learning how to play and all the advice she was given.

The programme's web pages are at:

I think she did really well - especially playing at the Royal Albert Hall, with the Bach!!!

I was really pleased to hear that she'll carry on playing!

I've just looked at the website. It's a shame the range of instruments being learned is a bit narrow - two keyboards, two fretted strings (ok, I know the banjo IS difficult), drums and sax. It doesn't include any bowed strings (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif). Perhaps the programme makers thought those might be too challenging for just six months of lessons before public performance?? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (Does this say something about that ol' chestnut of which instruments really are more difficult, esp. in the early stages?????)..... and now I'll need to get my tin hat ready..... I also thought she did well too but have never heard of her before. I know Hilary Davan Wetton though, he is from here and was my ex's school music teacher and still has local connections. It would be nice if they chose someone famous for the rest of the series!

I enjoyed it very much, but I hope that it hasn't given anyone the impression that learning an instrument is easy and a high standard can be reached in a very short time. Obviously the forum members here will know what is involved in taking up the challenge of a new instrument but many of the viewers may wonder why their children need years of lessons to reach a decent standard. I thought that Jo Brand coped with her performance nerves in the final concert extremely well though. What an achievement for her.

Shame that the Toccata is spurious "Bach" isn't it? Lucky old stick getting a go on Tonbridge School (Marcussen) and RAH (Willis, rebuilt Manders) -- not sure of her edition though, I'm sure she was supposed to be playing two handed in the "triplet section" (as is customary) but she was bashing it out one handed instead. Still, a good effort after four months !

Interesting show! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

*thinks about bringing out the ol' violin, clarinet and getting those vocal cords into shape* (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I was wondering if she was a playing a simplified version or whether she decided to omit the left hand due to the intense pressure of the occasion! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Perhaps someone had helpfully set her registration with a goodly complement of 16' stops or suboctaves.. would have sounded the same anyway!

Yes, her organ 'mentor' could have done that! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Do you know the organist in the organ tutorial clip, MrB?
