Hello, my name is Dorothea and I am doing Ancient Greek A Level. As well as Latin, music and history. Should be currently revising in order to get 3 As, but am using excuse that favourite pen has run out, though I have plenty of others. I am also addicted to the internet and playing the organ. And singing loudly.

I have done 14 ABRSM exams in 10 years. Yes, that includes theory.

*grin*

Many of my threads end up degenerating into language threads... or threads that I become involved in...

eg http://forums.abrsm.org/index.php?s=&s...st&p=475954

I did French at school along with some German and a little Spanish.

I did Russian at uni and some Croatian, an evening class in Japanese, and a short fun course in New Testament Greek.

I have recently finally given up trying to teach myself Turkish (it was a wrench but I never had time to get beyond the first chapter of the book!)

I have recently started trying to teach myself Hebrew and Arabic. The Arabic is giving me trouble (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) but getting on OK with the Hebrew.

Which other language(s) are you interested in/want to study? Or are you being sensible and sticking with 4?? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'm not very fluent in Russian any more - I don't get enough practice so it's like having rusty cogwheels in the brain - everything is there, it just doesn't move smoothly! Other than that there are no languases I would consider myself able to speak in a meaningful way, they're all between "holiday lingo" up to "getting by"!

ps there have been some cool language threads:

http://forums.abrsm.org/index.php?s=&s...st&p=119972
http://forums.abrsm.org/index.php?s=&s...st&p=139311

There have been others but struggling to find them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I'm a language freak, but we can only take 2 at our school! We get no choice either (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Its whatever you got landed with in year 7 plus whatever you got landed with in year 9. French, German or Spanish. I can understand some italian. Not much, but I'd love to teach myself properly, if I had time! I have another language freak friend too. Is there a language forum anywhere?

Me? Sensible? I think not! Well apart from Italian, which i'm trying to teach myself at the moment, i'm not sure really. Portugese? That looks like fun. But something like Japanese, Chinese or Mandarin (ooh i'm being ambitious!) would be really cool, but i don't know whether i'd have the time or patience to be able to sit and learn them!

Our school was like that only it was just German and French, I only did 2 years of German - I wish I hadn't dropped it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) it's one of the things I'd like to study with the OU.

It's all about the teaching - if you have good teachers who make it interesting then you don't mind how hard it is.

Awww that sucks! I was lucky with my school. We all had to take French from year 7 and then in year 8 we had to pick two from French, Spanish, Italian and German. Also in year 7 everyone had to take Latin, and then in year 8 we got a choice whether to do Latin, or Classical Civilisation, of which i chose Latin obviously! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Yes, again I was lucly with the teachers i got awell. All of them have been really nice. I had a Spanish teacher for a couple of years who was Spanish, which was really cool, as you really get to see what it's supposed to sound like.
