Hi, I need some songs to sing in assembly at school on the subject 'good to be me' and none of my books have much in them I fancy. Can anyone make any suggestions?

Which age group are we talking about? If it's littlies, then 'If I were a butterfly' fits the bill.

There's also a great one called "I might have knobbly knees" .....which is brilliant fun as it has actions to it.......

How about this - a lullaby sung by Roy Bailey (also featured on this web site - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A841358 )

EVERYTHING POSSIBLE

Verse 1
We've cleared off the table, leftovers saved
Washed the dishes and put them away
I've told you a story, tucked you in tight
At the end of your knock-a-bout day
When the moon sets a sail to carry you to sleep
Over the midnight sea
I will sing you a song no one sang to me
May it keep you good company

Chorus
Oh you can be anybody you want to be
You can love whomever you will
You can travel any country that your heart leads
And know that I will love you still
You can live by yourself, you can gather friends around
You can choose one special one
But the only measure of your words and your deeds
Will be the love you leave behind when you're done

Verse 2
There are girls who grow up strong and bold
There are boys quiet and kind
Some race on ahead, some follow behind
Some go in their own way and time
Some women love women, some men love men
Some raise children, some never do
You can dream all the days, never reaching the end
Of everything possible for you

Chorus

Don't be rattled by names, by taunts, by games
But seek out spirits true
If you give your friends the best part of yourself
They will give the same back to you

Chorus:

…Yes the only measure of your words and your deeds
Will be the love you leave behind when you're done

Roy Bailey is a folk singer but the album this is from - "Why Does It Have To Be Me" is less folky and is an album of songs for children, many written by Leon Rosselson (look at his website for another children's album). We played it many many times for our children when they were young and they loved them all - great sing-along stuff for infant/primary aged children.

There's a copy of Roy's album for sale at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-Does-Have-Be-Me/dp/B00002R0T9 - I highly recommend it!
