I've had my Grade 4 exam in 2005 and just had my theory exam in Feb. I am going to have a Grade 6 exam. I want to know if Pathetique is suitable for me if I learn it in a gradual progress. If not, so what do you recommend? Is "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" by Debuusy suitable for me? I am afraid that my fingers are overtrained as I play Pathetique and it sounds to be very diffecult. But some advises me to go on learning it as it will improve my skills greatly. Please give some advice.

I supect this is because it is actually a rather more advanced piece than grade 4/5 can normally cope with. Certainly the sonata in-toto is listed for Dip. However, why be strait-jacketed by convention? If you want to play it, and can play it, then play it! I don't believe in the concept of being "overtrained" in this sense. As for the Debussy Prelude, again if you want to and can then do: It's a lovely piece and is one of my current repertoire, ever since I got over the problem of "impossible" chords, such as in bar 6 (arpeggiate!). In a sense, the desire to play a piece will allow you to overcome quite a lot of problems and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone technically is unlikely ever to be bad for you. Enjoy it, go for it!

Maestro Group: Members Posts: 12255 Joined: 7-June 06 From: Wirral (originally Keighley, Yorks) Member No.: 7089	I would rate the third movement of Pathetique at about Grade 7, nothing really difficult technically, just a few bits of passgework/scaly bits to master. 'La fille' about Grade 6/7, but will smaller hands you will have to arpeggiate more than those of us who are better endowed.
