Has anyone else tried this Quiz yet?

It has five levels which of course increase in difficulty. I've just tried Level 1 (obviously getting 100% (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)) and took just over five minutes. Even at Level One the questions involved signatures that can go upto 7 #/bs. It makes you think. Level Five could prove tricky!

I was able to try it but it is not 100% accurate. It showed a key signature of five flats, all correctly placed and asked which one should not be there in the key signature of D flat major. Then it showed G flat as the incorrect one! I may try it again later.

Just done it. Got 100% in 4mins 15 seconds. Looks like the higher levels just want you to go faster rather than have harder questions.

I tried it using my laptop without the external mouse and it wasn't a fast enough method. You need a good mouse to throw the answers around.

You got me hooked there for a while. I passed up to level 3 quite quickly but nearly messed up level one because I typed in the answers wrongly e.g How many flats? I put '2 flats' instead of just 2. Got the hang of it now though!

My wrist is aching on the mouse so I'll try level 4 tomorrow or when I get back from Warwick next week. Don't want to make my eyes tired for the motorway journey.

Thanks for that though - it's a lot easier than the Maths skills test for QTS teacher status - which is also timed answers.

I can't finish level five in time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)
I got quite hooked a few weeks ago, but still was a few questions short of a pass by the end of the 20 minutes.
I emailed Philip Johnson to tell him about the errors and received a lovely reply saying he was going to do his best to iron out the problems. For some reason though, my computer hangs half way through (prob fed up of key sigs) and the only way it carries on is if I keep waggling the mouse. After 20 minutes I then feel not only frustrated 'cos I didn't get to the end but also that I had just spent 20 minutes staring at a screen and waggling the mouse (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
Ah well!

I have a Mac and it loaded, just didn't want to do it as it is timed, I don't like timed tests LOL do you use safari as a browser? sometimes it's the browser not the Mac, I use firefox and it loaded.

It's not very accurate. It's telling me that D# and G# major have no key signatures so I give up. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Actually they don't! G sharp major would need eight sharps and D sharp major would need nine! There are mistakes on the quiz site though.(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Scuse my ignorance but what's the key signature for Ab minor? I said it didn't have one (G# does, as the relative minor of B major) and it marked me wrong!!! Can anyone explain?

Oh hang on, is it the same as the key signature for Cb? Now what idiot would want to write in Cb and have it played on an equal-tempered instrument? What would be the point? Unless it was a string quartet, I suppose. But equal-tempered - there'd be no point whatsoever.

I've just checked out Wikipedia and it talks about some piano music in Cb. An equal-tempered piano, huh? How ridiculously pretentious!

A flat minor has seven flats and so does C flat major.
I know that it is confusing but there are differences between C flat major and B major when you are building chords and thinking about harmony, and how modulations work etc.

Ps After looking at your profile I see that you are a teacher and I am very surprised indeed that you do not know about something as basic as key signatures! Have you studied theory of music? Do you understand about the circle of fifths? Please don't take this as a criticism. I am just amazed, that's all.

All the mnemonics I learned when first learning about key signatures were for up to, and including 7 sharps and flats. It's only a requirement for Grade 5 that you need to learn up to 6 - Grade 6 says it requires "any major or minor key".

edit: I've just found something written in the key of Cb major (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) - it's the Harp Interlude in Bemjamin Britten's Ceremony of carols.
