Hi,

I have an 8 year old boy who is very keen to learn some blues pieces. All the books of jazz pieces I have looked at with him so far are very 'up beat' and he doesn't like them - they are too cheerful! Can anyone recommend some simple versions of more miserable music. please?!

Thanks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blues.gif)

I think the G1 jazz piano books might have a couple of more miserable ones - improv might be a bit much to expect but maybe he could try learning the head?? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Martha Mier's "Jazz Rags and Blues" has some nice pieces in , more G1 than absolute beginner, but you might be able to find something in the bluesy ones that suits.

Hi Sue,

Sounds like a great opportunity for some improvisation (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) He might be intrigued by exploring the intervals in the C blues scale and later adding some chords in the LH in the 12 bar blues pattern.
My music room has recently had a complete revamp and tidy up with new shelves, which now means I can't find anything, (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) so I will have to hunt for my blues repertoire. I think the Mier books are very good, even though I've only seen the Grade 4 one.

Good luck (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I think there is an easy Blues book in the Chester series - haven't got a copy to hand though and haven't used it recently so I can't quite remember the level.

First Pops is very easy and has some sad ones. Also reviewed in this month's Music Teacher is My First Blues & Boogie which I don't know, but apparently it's 'first class'! The standard is pre grade and Grade 1.

What about Christopher Norton's 'Stairway'? I don't know if you could exactly describe it as miserable, but, taken slowly, it could maybe be described as 'contemplative'. It was on the old Guildhall Grade 1 syllabus, and was one of the easier options, so it's probably just about exactly the standard you're looking for.
