Hi folks,

I am quite serious about practising my clarinet. I just got my ABRSM Grade 5 and so the highest note I can play is the highest Eb note when you play 2 octaves of the Eb major scale.

I note that most books are for beginners and the more difficult books are for professionals. Are there good books you can recommend? It'd be good if real pieces are given by famous composers.

I live in the Far East but I can always place orders on the internet.

Thanks

Sounds like you need a study book (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Or a few! I know that the Rubank Method books are good, perhaps not what you are looking for though. More tuneful alternatives are the 80 graded series - you would be at the end of book 1/start of book 2 now. Or theres Passage Studies, ed Thurston, which I prefer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) It is adaptions of 'real pieces' for solo clarinet.

And, scales!! And long notes!! Those are the staple of improving range and tone (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

In the '80 Graded Studies' book, do this pieces in the books increase in difficulty? So, for example, book 1 is grades 1-5 and book 2 is 5-8? Would you recommend them for a grade 2/3 ish standard?

The 3rd piece in the second book is on G6 - so I guess you would want the first book! I don't have that one to hand though, so I can't say for sure (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thanks, Rosemary. I think I'll go and buy the 80 graded series and the Passage Studies.

Broadly speaking, yes, and you're pretty much right about the standard of the two books - book 1 (red) is about grade 1-5, book 2 (green) is about grade 6-8. There will be some that you'd consider are slightly in the wrong order, depending on your strengths/weaknesses, but on the whole, the studies get gradually harder from 1 to 80. If you can afford it I'd also get book 1 as well. As you've only just passed grade 5 I don't think you will find many of the studies at the right level in book 2. There is quite a jump in the standard required for grades 5 and 6. The main point in working on studies is to work on your technique, something I think that needs to be really solid before dashing into the higher grades.

OK thanks. Will get Bk 1 too. Has anyone heard of 50 classical studies? I saw it in the Trinity syllabus for Grade 5.

Yes if its the one by Pamela Weston. Each study focuses on a different thing such as staccato, tonguing, ornaments, rhythm patterns etc... It's a useful book.

I used 50 classical as the main study book when I was learning a couple of decades ago. It used to be the book of choice as it had studies in it for each of the ABRSM grades. I think it wins the award for the most dog-eared music in my collection every page was held in with tape....before the tape perished! I like a lot of the studies in it - esp no 26 the tarentella I did for G5 and no 48 which I did for G8.

50 Classical Studies would be my choice at this level. I still use it if I have been out of practise a little. It happens too much these days. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I assume you have James Rae already?

Repertoire wise, some of my favourites at this level would be Singing And Swinging, Tartini, Finzi. You could try the Ebony And Ivory book as well. I've still to look into Jazzin About.

I used James Rae for my Grade 5 exam. Slavonic Dance. I'll never want to see it again. I bungled on that one. But, all's well that ends well cos I passed!!!!! hehe.
