Heylo everyone (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
I've been offered the chance to take on an extra anhancement course if I'd like to at sixth form. The options are; Community Sports Leaders Award Business German Conversational Manadrin or Criticial Thinking I was thinking out of those four, the only ones I'd really be interested in are the german, and critical thinking, but I don't have a clue what C.T involves. I was just wondeirng if any of you had taken it as an AS, and could say whether it's worth it and whether unis actually accept it or if it's like general studies where lots of unis don't accept it. Thankyou Lizzie |

It's a fake subject which requires no actual skill in anything.

I took it and quite enjoyed it, really (but had a cool teacher). It's about learning to look at arguments critically - evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of arguments, find flaws, write counterarguments, evaluate the reliability of the two sides in an argument. I found it fairly useful, and not much work at all. Plus you get an extra AS! [/end plug]

My son's school kind of suggested Critical Thinking was essential if you wanted to go to Oxbridge.
When I mentioned this to the Admissions Secretary at St John's College, Cambridge, she gave me a peculiar look and, checking her records, said that none of the previous year's intake had A-levels in Critical Thinking. Best wishes barry |

My son's school kind of suggested Critical Thinking was essential if you wanted to go to Oxbridge. The Oxbridge websites, prospectuses (and students that I know) all specifically state that Critical Thinking and General Studies are not accepted as subjects. They may be considered individually in special circumstances, but usually it's your more academic things that count. I do know some people who enjoyed Crit Think, but personally, I hated it. I usually love my subjects and I put in as much work as I can, but Critical Thinking was not for me. I signed up because it sounded "interesting" but in the first lesson the teacher told us that she'd never taught the subject before and had spentthe summer learning the syllabus. Hmm. Then she gave us a textbook and worksheets with questions on them such as "can a dance be counted as an argument"? Our school told us that we 'weren't allowed' to quit, which is why most people carried on. I went and pestered the exams officer day in day out in the week before they entered us for the exam, and I was the only person in the year allowed to quit. I guess that some people do enjoy it, especially if you like arguing and reasoning and things... hmm. -hugs PD- (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I remember this time last year, I was on the forums and in CISD asking exactly the same questions, and it was these guys (Nicki and Katyjay I think) who helped me make the right decision. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Good luck! <3 |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Good luck! <3 Aww, thankyou *hugs back* Yeah, I'm finding it really hard getting into sixth form and trying to decide what to do; everyone keeps pushing for us to do this that and the next thing, and it's really confusing. Also a lot of my friends from last year have left, and it wasn't until today that I realised just how much I enjoyed having them around. Everything's quiet now and I only have one person in my form currently who I get on with quite well and even she might not be in full time due to having M.E. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) My old german teacher has been pushing for me to do the business german, but I'm not too sure the exact reasons behind it; whether it's because he thinks I'll enjoy it or whether he just wants to have more people so that when it comes to reviewing the language college status he can show that it's worth offering it. But I just can't decide whether I want to go back to doing german again, or even whether I can stick two years of constantly missing my friends. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |
