In my other thread I mentioned I would like to take Gr 5 flute next spring - only really being pushed into it whilst the old syllabus is still fresh..
Anyhow, now reading about all the bits of the exam, one of things I am not sure of is what speed the apeggios are played at. I have "ABRSM's These Music Exams" and the guidance for scales is ok - crotchet-80,therefore scales played at quaver-160, but I can't work out what the arpeggios are - the guidance says quaver at 126, but my written out arps have them as quaver "triplets" - not sure how this works in practice, does each "triplet" take the time of one crotchet ie 63 bpm, or is each of the triplet quavers still at 126 (ie crotchet equivalent of 42 bpm) I shan't bore you all with inane questions about aural/sight reading jsut yet....early days! Any help, as usual greatly received. |

I think you play the scales in quavers, so I'd say play them at 126. (quaver).

Hi, looks like you are right.
The ABRSM scale book Arpeggio section *looks* like they are triplets (Three quavers joined together) but it doesn't actually have a "3" above/below the groupings. Thanks Richard |

I am sure mine aren't grouped in 3s...I'd play quavers, but I am sure some other flautists will pop along and answer your question.

They aren't triplets, they are just quavers. If quaver = 126, then you play one note for each beat at 126. At the higher grades it has the speed at dotted crotchet = whatever, in which case you play 3 notes to each beat.
Obviously, it's OK to play them faster than that (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Thanks all again.
When it comes down to it, Arps even at the scale speed pf c=80 (q=160) are ok, so its not as if I'll have a problem with speed...memory though is a different matter! Cheers |

Yeah the arpeggio speeds are quite nice actually - the scale speeds become more evil eventually though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

i can do C chromatic 3 octaves in one breath, but it goes super-fast and it just sounds like a not-so-fluid glissando...

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) The bit that slows me down is from A3 onwards I end up at half the speed then I speed up again however I can do it in one breath or at least I used to be able to. hum not done it for a while. Apreggios dont seem to be a problem can play these really really fast. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)
