I'm going to watch it now on iplayer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (not just to hear that - I always miss UC and love it - partly just to hear Jeremy Paxman going 'come on', or the look of disbelief on his face at some of the answers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

It always amuses me that Jeremy is so impressed at some of the simplest scientific answers, while being so deprecating over wrong answers to what seem to me obscure literary or historical things. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I was more amused at the idea of George Gershwin composing an opera in 1911 when there was an excerpt from Joplin's Treemonisha. He would have been 13 at the time. Conceivable, but given the ragtime beat... I think not.

I've never heard of Treemonisha before yesterday... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Aha... It was referred to in my complete Joplin Piano Rags volumes in Joplin's biography, and I have a song from it in my non-revised Schirmer Musical Theater Songs vol 1 Soprano.

Now given you are not a pianist nor a Soprano you can be forgiven, but I've known about it ever since I've had the music (which is simply ages dahrling!). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I suppose it's one of those things you know or you don't. Given they type of music dictionary geek I was in the sixth form I'd have found out about then anyway!

I do remember being surprised once in UC by an astonishingly easy music question: something like, "How many sharps are there in A major?"

When I played this in my grade 3 clarinet exam many moons ago, there were two sharps in A major (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yay.gif)

That's a jazz melodic minor! Same on the way up and down, it's one of the (many) scales on my practice rota. Most useful for its 4th mode (also called, by some people at least) a lydian dominant which you can play over unresolved Dom 7th chords, and it's 7th mode also called "diminished whole tone" or "altered" scale and used over a Dom 7th chords in certain contexts or for a specific effect.

So I should've got points for ingenuity then... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
