QUOTE(Maizie @ Jan 22 2012, 04:19 PM) *

Once, just once, I'd love to answer the standard start-of-office-day question of "what did you do at the weekend?" honestly...then I could see the look on their faces when I said that I spent Sunday afternoon doing calculus. Through choice. Fun fun fun (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Why calculus?

Though yes seeing the expressions would be fun

Somehow, corenfa, I imagined it might be you who'd reply to that (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Oh dear!

This reminds me of one New Year's Eve when for reasons I won't go into my husband and I with our son were staying in my brother's house on our own. As you can imagine, it wasn't very lively for BerkshireSon, and as he knew he would have GCSE mocks on return to school, he decided to do a GCSE exam paper. He said he couldn't wait to see the look on his friends' faces when they asked him what he'd done on New Year's Eve! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Why calculus?
Because this year it's an OU maths course that I'm doing. And today was the first calculus stuff - remembered the very beginning bits, but it soon got in to uncharted territory (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I had my own version of this a couple of weeks ago... my answer was "making a 3 foot tall giraffe"

it's for my soon-to-arrive niece/nephew....... and I also made an elephant (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

If it's any consolation, I offered yesterday to re-write an organisation's constitution so that they can register as a charity.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Fortunately, I've done it before... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) you'd think I'd know better (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Ok Maizie I'll stick you back into the Barking category.......the thought of you sitting down to do calculus purely for the fun of the calculations put you at least as far out as Dagenham East (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Which course are you doing?

(I can't take the mickey, I've spent the whole afternoon attempting to write a melody and accompaniment for my current OU course, and think some calculus might have been more successful)

MST121 - Using mathematics. A few years back I took the level 2 astronomy and planetary science courses, and really enjoyed them. Then they announced the level 3 follow on astro courses - which I'd love to do. The recommendations are that you have level 2 astro, physics and maths courses - and I only had the astro. So I looked at the level 2 physics and maths courses, and then decided to start with a level 1 maths course to cover the basics, as I only did AS level maths (and A level physics), and that was 1994.
So next year should be level 2 physics, the year after level 2 maths, and then after that I might be brave enough to try the level 3 courses... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

Of course, if the funding changes change again (and again and again and again) and I have to pay the new full price, then the mysteries of the universe will have to be put aside; then I reckon it will be the mysteries of higher-grade theory I attempt then!
