The BBC will probably do a good job on the Olympics. Certainly, they'll be better than Channel 4's effort at the World Athletics Championships last year... Or the BBC and the European Ice Skating Championships which were held in Sheffield..... Oh dear! I missed this : did it involve the BBC saying 'look, skaters. With skates on. Cor, that ice must be a bit chilly'...? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) No, it involved a few hours on the red button (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) And highlights one night on BBC2 (I think it was a 5 day thing). I know quite a few people who went and they said it was good. At least I got pictures! |

Now let's go to Tess Daly who is having a go at standing up on a puddle of ice!'??? What exactly is the attraction of La Folia that so many composers wrote things based upon it?? Almost the most tedious things I ever heard

What exactly is the attraction of La Folia that so many composers wrote things based upon it?? Almost the most tedious things I ever heard It's a very simple and commonly-used harmonic pattern, which means it's an easy base from which to derive any number of different variations. Downside of being simple and commonly-used is that it can become tedious quickly..... |

But they're still not THE most tedious thing I've ever heard which was the Khachaturian violin concerto, which I've had the misfortune of having to play in orchestra. |

I tend to think the Elgar violin concerto has a movement too many.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) At the time of La Folia, using a ground bass or an ostinato bass was popular as a musical form for writing/performing divisions - what we'd call variations. Several grounds were well-known and well-used, of which La Folia is one, Greensleeves was another. |

Thinking that Classic FM really shouldn't have "We Buy Any Car" music interrupting the bliss calm that followed the Allegri Miserere...
