My aunt recently invested in her first laptop. Somehow I was volunteered to teach her how to use it and send emails. Obviously it hasn't been going quite as well as I thought! She informed me yesterday that the only messages in her inbox were the ones she had deleted....... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

That does seem slightly odd!
I spent quite a lot of this afternoon taking up trousers. I bought ones labelled 'short' and still had to take them up by two and a half inches. I'm not that short!! |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) I'm about to try and set my Aunt up with a Kindle and an Amazon account on her laptop. I think she's only about 70 and I'm worried she's starting to write herself off! Judging by other elderly relatives I've had the ones that keep up with the modern world seem much more content towards the end of life. |

Having nerve conduction studies and EMG testing tomorrow. Really worried about needles being put into my muscles then having electric shocks sent down them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Violin Hero will love this....
Finally, after 5 weeks and logging of 4 "incidents" it has beend conceded that my office laptop is the reason why my screen keeps scrambling and not a) the cable b) the connector c) the connection hub d) the monitor. So, they've built me a new laptop (the one that's failed was new 8 weeks ago....). Delivered this afternoon, I might be able to use it eventually tomorrow as the first thing it does is encrypt the hard disk, which takes about 10 hours. It then has to download various software I need (such as the RDMS SQL I use). When I left today, it still had 41 downloads to complete (and how many restarts will that be?). I left it switched on (to continue encryprting) and locked it in a drawer. There's got to be an easier method! |

They won't put enormous currents through you - they'll be quite small - and I'd be surprised if it was painful. You are bound to be a bit nervous, but it won't be long until it's all done and they can tell you what is wrong. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I left it switched on (to continue encryprting) and locked it in a drawer. There's got to be an easier method! I know all about the encryption thing, ours only takes 3 hours though! We have a few consultants who use heavy programs like SAS so we built a supercomputer with the best hardware that exists, cost us over 2500 GBP and that is without any licenses for software. Must admit that I once built a laptop remotely and creating a local copy of the mail file took over 7.5 hours, I actually left it overnight so it may have taken several more hours at that point. I will never build a laptop again in a country with a very slow internet connection and limited infastructure! At least you have a decent laptop. My employer gives support staff (techy guys, receptionists, PAs etc) 5 year old Lenovos. I leave mine on all the time as booting up takes far too long............ What I find is people report an issue and I think "ok that is an easy one to fix" and then find a ton more issues as I try and sort the reported issue. No such thing as easy in the IT support world! As to an easier solution roll the clock back to the 1960s where computers were not used in the workplace. |

The head of my daughter's school has changed the times that the bell rings. They no longer finish at 5.30 but at 5.28; the morning break is from 9.58 to 10.03 and the time alloted for the lunch break is 1 hour and 29 minutes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)
