My friends laughed at me today after I enthused about the possibility of getting a piccolo (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Why? I think they are pretty cool - I wouldn't mind learning it myself. I just don't have the time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Aww, that's a bit mean of them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I'm not sure I'd like a picc. What I would very much like is an alto floooooot (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Sorry about this, don't feel you have to read it, I'm just fed up of being side tracked and getting nothing done, so I thought it might help if I wrote down some ground rules for my self:

Today, I am going to do lots of effective recorder practise!

<snip>
erm, I think that's about it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif)
I can't help thinking that you have just spend half an hour typing this lot out when you could have been practising (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) .

It was half an hour well-spent because it meant that I didn't spend several hours procrastinating and, instead, got about 7 hours of decent practise done. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I now feel mentally drained, so will get an earlyish night (meaning before 2am) and do the same thing tomorrow. There's hope for me yet! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

They just make the most gorgeous sound, but I must prioritise. My principal clarinet needs a check up, I'm looking for a better flute and I've got to get a 'cello...

I'm addicted to instruments. Oh dear... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Ah, well my friends are quite cool. And I'm not really cool. I just sort of trundle along smiling, in my own little dream world. But we get on well. And they find it quite cute in an annoying way that I love flutes and music.

They were annoyed though, because for a while, my excuse for not going shopping with them was that I didn't have any money, (they all have bucket fulls, because they all come from the rich town.) And the reason I didn't have any money, was because I spent it all on my (first ever, beautiful, amazing, shiny, fantastic, brilliant, sparkly, ) flute, and was in debt to mum for ages.

You see, so know they have a thing against flutes. Plus the fact that I go on about them a lot....

One day one of them said, "what can be so interesting about a long metal tube with a few holes?" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

You should try playing the recorder. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) One comment which particularly in my mind is: "You paid £300 for a stick with holes in?!?!" from my best friend (So far, I haven't mentioned to her the newest member of my collection, which was rather more than that).

The other observation is that if someone asks what instruments I play, then grades, when I say I've done grade 8 piano, it's generally "wow, you must be really good etc etc". When I say I'm doing grade 8 recorder, on the other hand, it's more like "erm... that's nice...do you play the flute?" or just "Why?!?!". (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Hehe, I'm at work!

Although I'm not working. I'm at workSHADOWING today with mum.

Which means a whole day of hot chocolates and computers.

But apparently I have to go somewhere to learn how to lift old ladies this afternoon

I don't get why people think that investing hundreds, or even thousands of pounds in an instrument is silly. If you divide that amount by the time you'll have fun playing it it's a pittance.

EG: 7K on a piano that lasts you 10 years = roughly ?1.90 a day. I don't see the problem (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

(this is how I always justify big purchases and treats for myself, otherwise I'd never buy anything expensive!) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

What I failed to mention was that the friend who said that is a violinist, so it was more a comment on the recorder than instruments in general. I don't think she was too pleased when I replied back "Well, why do people spend thousands of pounds for a box with strings on it?"

Haha fair enough. But for the average Joe Public who doesn't understand, I suppose you could tell them it's for the same reason that people don't do a Blue Peter job with a biscuit tin, a bit of wood and a few strings instead of buying a nice steel guitar (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
