NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

The window cleaners are here! One minute you're happily browsing the internet in the privacy of your home, and the next minute an army of liquid-happy labourers has turned up and started soaking your windows and the surrounding area whilst peering in to see what's going on. They discuss pool parties and spirits as they manifest themselves on your premises, taking note of how mega-untidy your house is and the fact that you really dislike washing up regularly. Proper disses my policy that it's safe to walk round unclad if you're home alone, not that I tend to...

These aren't your average window cleaners, either. These are the cutting edge in domestic sci-fi and have a fancy plumbing system in the back of their van that squirts water up to, and sometimes through, the upstairs windows, so that climbing ladders to reach the windows is a thing of the past. They use rather abrasive-seeming brushes that are connected up to this system. Upon their departure, it will appear to an outsider that a monsoon has recently blown o'er...

I'm not sure whether the new system that washes the upstairs windows is as efficient as the window-cleaner up a ladder, but I'd far rather fling back the curtains and be faced by just a brush on the end of a hose, than a grinning window-cleaner (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

We're off on holiday tomorrow, so I shan't be posting for a fortnight. Looking forward to reading all I've missed when I return, including Sarah123's recorder result - best of luck, Sarah! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I'm starting work tomorrow. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif)

It sounds fun (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Don't worry... it'll be fine and you'll be great... Let me know how it goes? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I started at 9:45 this morning and have just got back. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) It was fairly easy, even though I dropped an ice cream sundae on the floor. Everyone was like "everyone's done it", except my brother, who said "I've never done that..."

Of course, apparently, he once threw away the day's takings, once broke the £300 coke machine, and once when a customer said: "Can I have an ice cream sundae?" responded: "You mean 'Can I have an ice cream sundae PLEASE!'"

He was in a bad mood apparently. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Having spent quite a lot on visiting our daughter in Moscow over the New Year, we are slumming it in BerkshireSon's student house in Durham - figured that as he and his friends are having to pay the rent on an empty house we might as well have the benefit! (We are actually going to pay the rent for them whilst we're staying there.)

Hoping to get to Alnwick Castle, Hadrian's Wall, Lindisfarne, Whitby, etc, etc.

Thanks to you too, Barry. And to Sarah. I should really be in bed by now, but don't feel at all sleepy - must be the excitement!

Durham and the surrounding area is lovely!

Your holidays sound good to me, as a Durham alumna and someone who studied Russian and therefore did a year in Russia I have fond memories of both (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Hope you slept OK BM!!

The Durham Dales are worth a visit too, especially if you're prepared to do a bit of walking - you get a much better view of the beautiful countryside if you go away from the car for a bit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) There's a really good bakers in Stanhope which does the best pies and sausage rolls I've ever had. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

Sarah: for some bizzare reason everyone I know who's done Russian at Durham has been called Sarah (or Sara pronounced like Sarah) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) - I'm adding you to that list now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Sarah, sorry to be nosey, but did you study Russian on it's own or combined with another subject, and did you do an A level in Russian before you went to university, or did you learn it from scratch? I ask because I'm considering studying French at university and would like to combine it with either Italian or Russian, but the Italian or Russian would be from scatch (French at post A level when I get there), and wondered how easy it is to study a language from scratch like that?
