Moving onto to grade 8 sax now (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)
My teacher advises me to buy the CD but as I am also starting new grades on piano and flute I think just buying all the books is enough! So, I don't want extremely long pieces as I find it hard not to faint during some long pieces! For one of the choices I'd like a very lyrical piece, that just sounds amazing and will move anybody. And I would really like a fun, lively piece as another. If anyone can guide me in the direction of what pieces would suit any of these guidelines I would be eternally greatful! Thanks. |

The thing about buying the CD is that you'll save money by NOT buying music that you find you don't like! Difficult for us to advise, since what we are moved by may not move you... and we may nto know the piece that you love the most. Your teacher is likely to know the pieces, I would think. Still: IMHO it's hard to go wrong with James Rae, and If Only ... might meet your criteria for a lyrical piece. |

A good short study is Scherzando SAx in Alan Bullard's 60 for sax.
Fun ones are definitely the exotique dances by Francaix - if you love rhythm these are the ones for you. I am playing Pambiche, Biaou and Merengue. The last one can be done in two breaths (apparently!!) and lasts about 20 seconds. The Lunde is also fun, and the Grovlez is very nice - quite Spanish in feel. I think I will go with the Lunde for my A piece as it's quite jazzy and I loved the 2nd movement when I did gr 6. Get your scales going as from now - they'll really help! Good luck and happy playing! |
