... Doesn't something similar happen in the process for making Harris tweed? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) Having just looked it up - apparently, wee was involved in a lot of traditional dyeing until they discovered other mordants (I think that's the stuff that sets the dye in the cloth). |

My friend has just told me that she's passed her ATCl with 93/100!
She tried to do it a few years ago but was too ill, but now she's done it, and she's getting married later this year - go girlie! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

A perfect day, really. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Began with a lie-in; then packed a picnic and en route to destination called in to old dad and OH fixed up his digi-box thingy. Drove to cliff-top bird reserve and walked along the headland path in gorgeous weather. Ate picnic looking over huge limestone cliffs and down at gannets, herring gulls and kittywakes (sp?) We carried on to a vast, beautiful, almost deserted beach with perfect sand and no painful pebbles to hobble over. Had a paddle in the clear blue sea and then walked back - about 8 miles altogether. Watched the Verdi Requiem during dinner, which rounded things off nicely. *sigh* |

Speaking to my husband who is actually seems quite happy considering he's out in the middle of nowhere in Zambia and way out of his comfort zone! Um.... having fun in the hot tub with my kids finding accomadation next door for our ex-lodgers, so they'll still be near us but not in our house! Not a bad day really considering I was feeling a little lonely this morning! |

I have learnt that if you want to use woad to make dye, you have to ferment it and wee on it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rofl.gif) I hope that piece of information comes in useful sometime. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) I doubt it ever will! The reason it was even on GQT at all was that a lady said that she wanted to plant traditional dye plants to dye the wool that she spins (blimey, she really must be into this self-sufficiency thing), and she asked for some tips on how to grow them. The panelist said that she might want to not tell her neighbours what she was up to, as kings & queens used to ban woad fermentation from taking place near any highways that they might be travelling near, because it stank so badly. Doesn't something similar happen in the process for making Harris tweed? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) 'Wee' finds uses in all sorts of processes, even today. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Church bells are cast in moulds made from a mixture of horse dung, straw and clay. The moulds are baked dry in an oven, and any cracks are filled with a thinned down mix of the above! Apparently, the ureic acid in the horse dung is important to acheive the correct tempering of the alloy used to cast the bells. Having been to Taylor's Bell Foundry in Loughborough to see our new Treble and Second cast I can assure you the smell is something else! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif) My happy is having just returned from a brilliant week's holiday, which included all the usual things plus steam trains and being locked in to a veeerrrry large ecclesiastical building (after hours) with only a four manual Willis and a pile of organ music to pass the time. A 1st lesson with a lovely 11 year old. He's just passed his G1 but had to stop lessons with his previous teacher due to changing schools. Today was a trial lesson - I hope he becomes a regular.
