Can anyone tell me if you lose marks if you use pedal in an A list piece. All of my teachers told me that you weren't supposed to use pedal as it is not in keeping with the style of the piece, but I am finding some of the higher grade pieces are lending themselves to pedal. Opinions?

I think for the most part composers like Bach and Scarlatti should not need pedal. However knowing that you are looking at the Shostakovitch, then certainly it requires pedalling in a number of places, particularly the prelude. The Mendelssohn option would also benefit from pedalling.

I cannot say for certain whether you would lose marks for using the pedal (you would have to ask someone from the AB itself), but although it is unnecessary most of the time, occasional judicious use of the pedal (as fsharpminor states) ought not to be penalised in my view. The idea that it is inauthentic seems a bit half-baked: by that logic surely it is inauthentic to play such works on a piano as opposed to a harpsichord!

Are you thinking about List A pieces in Grade 8 or in any grade?

Do keep in mind that List A pieces in Grades 1-7 encompass the Baroque and Classical periods. I doubt that pedalling would be necessary for the elementary grades. However, it may be a good idea to use the pedal for some Classical pieces at the higher grades.
