Well, about six months to a year ago my jaw would click out of place when I sang or yawned with a very wide open mouth. It wasn't really painful and clicked straight back in again, but I mentioned it to the dentist who said it was common and not to worry unless it was very sore as I'd grow out of it; Last time I was due to go to the dentist, in about November, it had stopped clicking out and was fine. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) But about 2 weeks ago it started not clicking out but I could feel the bones rubbing and it is painful when I chew although not all the time, it's worse at night and can hurt when I put my mouth into my clarinet embrochure. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Any advice on this? I'm on holiday at the moment but I'm thinking of going to the doctor's when I get home. Thank you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Clickiness is quite common but you should get it checked out in case your TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) is unstable. It may be inflamed given the fact that it's now painful. In the interim, ibuprofen should help (read the labels on the packet (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) )

I've had this problem.... the osteopath called it TMJ dysfunction (not entirely sure what it's short for, sorry). He said maybe I clench my jaw in my sleep... but it turns out I have really developed muscles on one side of my neck and not on the other (I have to admit to clicking my neck.... and joints in general, which horrified him (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) ) and so he's gradually trying to even everything out. Dentists can make you a mould to wear at night, if you grind your teeth/clamp your jaw, apparently. If it's more a muscle thing, i've found the osteopath to be a real help.
