Just curious - while I don't own an electric guitar, I have a strong hankering for a fender. tele's are just so cool - really stripped down, basic guitars, with a great fundamental sound - and strats are so adaptable.

I'm not not really a gibson/ humbucker person at all.

Since it's still the sily season, I just wondered what other people's perferences were (assuming you know what I'm talking about....)

Well I think it is very simple. If you know what you are doing then either (or any of a dozen other brands) will sound marvellous. And if you don't it doesn't matter what you play, it'll sound c r ap

Now - if Bosendorfer made guitars ...

So is Fender vs Gibson and bit like Stradivari vs Guarneri?? You fall into one camp or the other (but would not turn down the other as gift (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) )

Yes, but more recently Clapton has gone over to the dark side (strats). Even my hero FZ moved from Gibson SGs to strats.

Back in my teens I always favoured the Gibson Les Paul as used by Jimmy Page and Paul Kossof but I remember seeing Roy Buchanan making all sounds imaginable with a Tele and a little Fender amp on a chair.

If you want a quality guitar at a sensible price, Gordon Smiths made near Manchester are superb. I have a Graf which is a bit like a cross between a Les Paul and a tele (if you can imagine such a thing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) ) and a Fender champ amp. One day I might learn to play.

But for a real "boutique" guitar at a price to match, have a look at Tom Anderson. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

I don't own an electric guitar either, but I just got the Christies catalogue for their fine musical instruments sale on Oct 10th, which has some pictures at least (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
I'm wondering where the diferences lie between electric guitars. Surely sound wise, one solid body electric guitar is much the same as another besides the strings, pickups and amp.
If you are buying one, then is your decision based mostly on aesthetics?

True different tonewoods for the body and neck give different sounds (all other things being equal). The design of the body (solid, solid with chambers, or hollow) makes a difference too. The shape of the body affects "playability" which is why the strat became so popular. Pickups make a bigger difference, especially combined with the switching available between pickups. The amp makes a massive contribution to the overall sound (valves only please and you MUST turn it up to 11 for that authentic "cranked" sound).

Oh and the player!! I believe that makes some difference (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
