Grateful for a little help, please. I am working my way through the RSCM material (in addition to ABRSM) and I need to find a (hopefully well-known) tune which starts with a minor 6th interval. I have plumped for the R Willis version of "It came upn the midnight clear" for a major 6th interval, but cannot identify anything which is minor. A Christmas related tune would be ideal, as I have used carols for other intervals, such as 3rds, 4ths and 5ths. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

The Prelude to Tristan and Isolde starts with a minor 6th (A to F) ... but I'm not sure if that's the sort of catchy tune you were after. I'll have to think a bit more about this ...

The Prelude to Tristan and Isolde starts with a minor 6th (A to F) Oi, that's MY point of reference for a minor sixth (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Others include the Overture to La Forza del Destino (not as obscure as it immediately sounds - it was used in the film Jean de Florette and in a Stella Artois commercial), and the theme to Love Story is a falling minor sixth followed by a rising minor sixth. |

Naff, but effective! Just noticed I've been pipped to the post! |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) I've just flicked through CC1, and didn't spot anything which opened with a minor sixth. There were a few major sixths, notably The Holly and the Ivy. This forum really lives up to its reputation! Super suggestions - as I'm a romantic tenor, I'll go with the Love Story theme.
May I now push my luck and ask for suggestions for a tune starting with a minor 7th? |

Thanks for that Chris.
I actually need to sing that interval at the end of the "Libera Me" in Faure's Requiem, where the first tenors leap from D to C. Might be strange to mix Faure with West Side Story! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Oh, I don't know - Andrew Lloyd Webber's been doing it for years (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

This might be a bit of a long shot - but once my school choir had tackled 'In Freezing Winter Night' from Britten's 'Ceremony of Carols' we had no more problems with min 6ths. Not sure whether it'd be worth teaching the carol for that specific purpose, though.

Oh, and if you want a falling minor 6th, the obvious one is the Eb to G at the start of the Gigue from Shoenberg's Suite Op. 29. Very catchy.

My suggestion for a major sixth is "My Bonnie lies over the ocean", and for a minor sixth (downward) "All things bright and beautiful". For other intervals click here.

Thanks again to the responders who kindly answered my questions. The link that kenm provided is especially useful, and one I will use for our church choir! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/chorale.gif)
