Hiya, I've been playing the piano for 6 years. I have always played classical music show tunes etc until just before christmas when i tryed my hand at some jazz music.
I really enjoyd playing it and my teacher sed that i had the rhythmn to do more jazz stuff. I am now thinking about doing a jazz exam but last week i saw the scales were v strange and that you had to improvise on a piece you were given on the day which i got v nervouse about. I am now confused about whether to do the exam or not. If i did i would probably do grade 3.
Do you think i should go for it or wait until ive tryed more pieces and become totally confident in my improvisation?

Any comments welcome!!
thnx

If you've never done jazz before regardless of what level you are at classically you should start at grade1. That way you can educate yourself gradually into the whole feel and concept behind jazz and improvisation.

I agree that you should try the Grade 1 first because jazz scales are different, more interesting in tonality and presents a whole different "feel" in playing. I am currently preparing to do Grade I although I may skip to Grade 2, but al least Grade I sets the stage for what is ahead. Continue to enjoy!!!
