I will take my bass to my teacher's house on my next lesson (next saturday) and she will tell me if the set up is good for me (ie is the nut too high etc etc as you may know), her and her husband make/restore/repair double basses so she will be able to help me out if needed. Good thinking! I had forgotten that she hasn't seen it yet. QUOTE Reassuring to hear my stretch may improve in time, if not I'll just have to shift every time, which will get easier with time I am sure. Improvement is not guaranteed, but all bass players have to do a lot of shifting, most of them more than I do, so you will soon get good at it. |

I went to a concert on Sunday night that my cello teacher was playing in and the orchestra was playing a Tchaikovsky cello concerto. There was a fancy bit near the end in the solo part with lots of harmonics in the very highest registers. So I was telling my teacher last night that I really liked that part, and she said I could play those harmonics, though obviously not so fast. I looked at her as if she were mad, but she said really, I could, and she showed me where they were, and I got them! Then she showed me how to do a glissando hitting all the harmonics, and I did it! It was so exciting!
She also said I had beautiful tone, and she couldn't believe I had that sort of tone after only a month, normally it took years. I hadn't thought it was anything special, I thought that as someone who had reasonable tone on the violin, I ought to be able to transfer it to cello, but she said no, if anything as a violinist she expected my cello tone to be worse! So I am loving the cello right now! (Still get confused by the fourth finger not being the same as the above open string though!) |

She also said I had beautiful tone fantastic stuff false harmonic (IMG:style_emoticons/default/party1.gif) am really happy for you it does boost your morale quite a lot when teachers pay you a compliment and even more when you know they mean it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I am also doing different kinds of harmonics lately, but that's on violin and that is an 'upper string' subject so I'll keep it out of this 'lower string' thread (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

Well done you - I am with your teacher because tone on the cello can be a real challenge. It sounds as though you have a terrific feel for the cello and the thing about the cello is that it will sing right back to you, almost purring, if you get it right! |

Got it!
Woo Hooooo. I have made a decision, payed my money and I now have a cello. Of the two I tried I went for one that is about 39 years old, Romanian and gorgeous. When I get a spare minute I'll post a picture. I've been practising hard after my first lesson and have my first scale learnt (ish) Bass clef takes a bit of getting used to, but it's all great fun. My target is to play in my local orchestra asap, and yes I do intend enjoying the ride. Looking forward to my next lesson on Monday. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) please please DO post a photo of it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I am lucky I did piano so bass clef is not a task for me, but yes, it would be if you are learning it from new, but it will be soon second nature am sure (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) let us know how your next lesson goes. I have my second lesson on the double bass tomorrow, can't believe it's been 2 weeks already and I've been a good girl and practiced EVERY DAY BUT the first thing I will tell my teacher when I step through her door tomorrow, will be: HEEEEEELLLLLLPPPPP I am finding this to be SOOOOOO hard I am not sure I will EVER be a good bass player (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) My fingers are always SO sore, the gaps to reach the notes are too wide (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) I will let you know what she said (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

Ok, been to my 2nd Bass lesson (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Feel heaps better as my teacher (who also builds/restores basses with her husband) said the set up on my Bass is so totally out only a gorilla could play well on it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) The nut needs adjusting to bring the strings much lower, so does the bridge, the strings need bringing closer together too, they are way too wide apart she was saying. So I tried to play on 'Josephine' a 1948 bass she has (she has 5 to 6 basses in her house (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) ), and it was MUCH easier, she said once my Gandalf has been set up properly it will be heaps easier and that will decrease the stretch from 1st to 4 finger too!! I will drop Gandalf off in the week at her shop and leave him there for a day or two and they'll sort him out for me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Other than that, she said Gandalf is a really good bass, I paid £1300 for him but she said he plays like a £4000 bass (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) and once the strings have been 'played in' and he's been played in too he will sound really good (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) She added more scales and pieces, brought me up to grade 3 with my scales and has given me grade 2 pieces to play in the next fortnight.
