Anyone allow their students to hold a stringed instrument like the player on the front page of the recent Libretto?

While the hold does appear questionable, the player is clearly in 3rd or maybe even 4th position. At this point the hand sometimes does have to take a slightly different shape, especially if you are playing across the strings in higher positions. Hand size is often the guiding factor.

Additionally, looking at the bow hand and the somewhat high class violin, this player is male and clearly a more mature adult - possibly a violin teacher?

Perhaps a question in the 'Ask the Chief Examiner' might be in order as to where the photo was taken, or sourced from.

But I have to say that I do like the new look of the Libretto. It far easier to read.. much better layout and looks classy. The actual content hasnt changed much.

True enough - I think the thumb is a bit high for 4th position. As you say Amanda, mayeb he has a longer thumb than me! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

While we're on the subject of Libretto photos, I was rather surprised by the one for the article about Special Visits. Was the child supposed to be sitting with their teacher or was this some kind of suggestion that if you have a Special Visit the examiner sits with you and works on the music? In my experience, SVs are just the same as any exams. I think the photo portrayed an image that could be misleading perhaps?
