hiya well i recently bought a violin which isnt in great condition and needs fixing up.
1 problem i didnt notice right away was that the bridge is inside the violin! ahhh what a pain. what would be the best method of getting it out?

2 how would i know what kind of strings it needs? do they need different strings for different sounds?

3 what kind of bow would i need?

before you ask i have never played the violin before and so i dont have a clue. i took a sudden interest a month or so and cant really afford new a new violin. so untill i have had a chance to practice and see if i like it for real then i would save up the cash needed for the right one.

thanks

I'm rather puzzled as to how the bow could get inside the violin?!?! I'd have thought it wouldn't fit! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Is there any chance of a picture?

I'm definitely not a violin expert, but Dominants seem to be generally considered to be a good place to start with strings. They're what I have on mine at the moment and seem to sound nice (ignoring the bad playing:rolleyes: )

As far as bows go, it sounds like you're going to need to go to a luthier to get the violin fixed, so you could ask them to recommend some bows. After my violin had been fixed, the luthier gave me four bows to try out for a couple of weeks while I chose one.

What you need to get is a nice, sharp saw.

Saw right across the 'vile din' (technical name for a naff violin in a beginner's hands!) horizontally until sawn all the way through. Remove bow. Throw in bin. Take up the electric keyboard.

Hello Jane and (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.gif) to the forum.

The bow cannot be inside the violin because a bow is longer than the total length of a volin. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) If you are talking about a short piece of wood then this is the soundpost.

You need to take the violin to a luthier (violin maker) to get it looked at. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) If the soundpost has fallen then this will need to be put back in place by the luthier, and even if it is still in place it may need adjusting. It is likely that the bridge will also need to be adjusted. The luthier will be able to give you an opinion on the kind of strings which will suit the violin.

It may me less expensive to get a new violin than to have the old one set up properly (although if it is a good old violin then it might be worth setting it up). A luthier would be able to advise you on this. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) I had thought the OP was a genuine question, but I'm not so sure now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) HG - are you thinking that Bernie has changed usernames?

You weren't given a cello instead of a violin perhaps? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

That makes much more sense!
With a cello you could probably fit a bow inside (goodness knows how you'd get it in there though!).

Maybe if you post your approximate location someone might suggest a luthier?

NO need for you to blush, Jane. You DID actually say that it was the bridge that was inside the violin, (which it jolly well should never have been, I think!).

You could probably get the bridge out with tweezers through one of the f-holes if you're careful. Otherwise, the luthier could do it.

She did say the bow originally, but has now edited it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

"luthier" is a term that's bandied about a lot on this forum. Most non-French violin makers (for Luthier is a French word) refer to themselves simply as violin makers.

Am I the only one - apart from the OP, perhaps - who thinks the title of this thread almost as amusing as the original post itself? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
