Woohoo! Were having a clearout at school today and found a cello that hasn't been played in years. It was gonna be thrown out seeing as we have no cellists in our school, so i saved it. Needless to say it isn't a very nice one...! There's no label inside so i have no idea what it is and whoever had it has peeled a lot of the varnish off the side... and the paint on the fingerboard is coming off... urgh! But, it sounds ok!
Where shall i start?!
I need a really, really cheap cello bow and bridge... is a stentor bow a good option?
(I'm not gonna have lessons or anything, this cello is gross, it's purely just for fun!)

I'd get a bow and a bridge from Stringmail.co.uk - very cheap and free postage.

Enjoy the cello!

Poor cello-nearly being thrown away (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) , sounds like it needs some looking after, good on you for saving it!

Lucky You. I have hankerings to play the cello again.
I had lessons in my last two years at school, (1963 and 64!)
Got up to the Breval Sonata in C (is it about Grade 4 ish ?), but it was the schools instrument, and I handed it back when I left at Christmas 1964 .
I did find it difficult to apply myself to a new instumernt when I got a Dip. on the piano during my first cello year.

Even if you think you don't want cello lessons at the moment it's definitely worth getting someone to show you the basics - and the differences from how you handle the violin (yes... there are more than just not sticking the pin through your neck..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) ). Have a word with your violin teacher, he/she may be able to either give you a few pointers themselves or be able to recommend a collegue who could give you one or two 'get up and get you going the best way' sessions.

Lucky you!
M

(still using brothers lovely cello and thinking about having to return/replace (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) )

This could be the start of something . . .a bit of TLC, careful adoptive attention and before you know it . . .Enjoy!
