Following a recent discussion with FluteDiva!! on another thread, I would like to found a club for short people. If you get taken for much younger than you are, or are just exceptionally short, you are welcome to join! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
This thread can be used to talk about the pros and cons of being 'vertically challenged'... and anything else really... I'm just going to quickly complain about often getting asked 'So have you just moved up to secondary school then? How are you finding it?'. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) I'm 14 and in Year 10 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) but 5' 2" which I suppose explains it. MB (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I'm 5'2 as well, and nineteen. Most people are too polite to comment, given that, since I'm at uni, I have to be at least 18. When I came home and started work, I got bossed around so much though. Everyone thought I was the youngest... When they found out my real age they all started being so much nicer! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

OH dear (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) My Mum used to love the Kings Singers.
May I join please? I am only 5'4", and way past year 11. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) Bev PS Most of my friends are 5'7" and my hubby is 6'3". Even in high heels, he is a head above me, the wedding photos are slightly amusing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I'm just about 5'0" so I definitely qualify! I had fun in Topshop the other day...I wanted some skinny jeans, so picked up size 8 short - to find that they ended about 3 inches past my ankles... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) Usually I buy children's clothes because it's just easier!! I once had a boyfriend who was 6'4"... and that wasn't fun! I looked like his little sister! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I wouldn't mind being so small if I looked my age (I'm 17), but I look about 12, which is just embarrassing! I clearly have no authority as head girl - most of the first formers are bigger than me - and I got stopped by a new teacher the other day! He wanted to know why I wasn't in my form room...to which I replied: "I'm in the Upper 6th!" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Another con of being teeny - I'm always the subject of practical jokes at school! I've been shoved in paper recycling bins, hoisted on top of the lockers, put in the understairs cupboard (that was actually quite scary! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)) and on an outward bound course once, the instructor tested my harness by lifting me up about 3 feet off the ground! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I was about 14 and hadn't finished growing at the time...so I was about 4'10"!

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) This used to happen to me at school. Even worse was when I started teaching (in a French school so the pupils didn't wear a uniform) and other teachers would try to stop me from entering the staff room because they thought I was a pupil (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) On the plus side I paid half-fares on buses and trains until my mid-twenties (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

would have happened to me as well I am sure apart from the fact that sixth formers at my school wore suits while lower school wore uniforms.

I'm 5 foot 2 and stopped growing decades ago. On the few occasions when I can compare myself with other people (such as in the mirrors in dance classes) I'm always surprised at how little I look.

5 feet 0.36 inches (yes that 0.36 of an inch is very important to me!) and size 6 jeans, I think that makes me a suitably qualified case for being vertically challenged, especially in supermarkets where the top shelves are only reachable by someone of either 6 feet in height or arms the length of Mr Tickle.
Being tiny does keep you looking younger and the one thing I'll say to to all those who are still teenagers on this forum and don't like being small, YOU WILL ONE DAY!! Once you hit 30 and anyone new you meet mistakes you for about 24 years of age, you'll have your petite physique to thank for it. OK then - I'm 5ft and a very important 1/4 inch - at least I was the last time I was measured! Good posture can make all the difference and going to stretch and extend exercise classes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Your true height is best measured first thing in the morning as soon as you get out of bed. Why? because gravity squashes the vertebrate closer together while you stand or sit throughout the day. Once laying flat, the soft tissue in the spine will return to its true dimensions - hence why astronauts on long term space missions can 'grow' by almost an inch in height while in a weightless environment.....but the downside is that a lack of gravity also weakens the bones. Weightbearing exercise is a must just to stop the bones losing density, particularly in the femural neck and lower lumbar. |

I'm five foot three.
I don't really think of myself as vertically challenged. I just used to find it annoying at being thought I was younger than I was. However, as Amanda says, these days I quite like it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |
