Do you need to have a grade 8 To be considered for music at University. At the moment I am about grade 8 standard, but I do not have the grade, and my teacher said that it would stop my progress ( A year ago I was about Grade 5)

Please answer

It very much depends on the particular university. A lot of unis will audition anyway if they call you to interview to get an idea of what your playing is like...

If you play bassoon, which I assume you do as your name is baroquebassoon, you probably won't need a Grade 8 unless you want to go to Oxbridge or music conservatoire, because unis are crying out for bassoonists.

Precisely!!!!!!!!!!

I've got 3 of the things, and I got REJECTED from one place.

It really doesn't make much of a difference in some cases.

I would say that you would need your grade 8, there is no one below grade 8 at my uni and that includes bassoonists of which there are about 7. I don’t think that they would favour rarer instrument just because they are in need of them e.g. oboe, bassoon because the main focus is not on group performance it’s more academic subjects.

Some only ask for it in performance modules, so if you do composition ones you won't need it. And if you've got your grade 8 by the end of the first year, you could do performance modules anyway! It depends really, and some want a grade which they don't specify in the prospectus, I had to ask one of them to find out.

Pianist 1210, what's the story with music at NZ universities these days? I know Auckland now has a strong ethnomusicology department...does that mean that classical music students should go to Victoria or other universities instead? Is Otago still the best place for composition students?

Are you heading to university next year? If so, good luck!

Hiya
I made sure i got my grade 8 keyboard before i went to audition for Uni but they didnt even ask if i had it or not! I think it depends onthe uni. The one i go to doesnt tend to ask for specific grades although it is expected your knowledge and playing skills are at a fairly high level which youd expect anyway at degree level.

There are U's willing to admit students not having grade 8 in piano for various reasons, that I do not want to elaborate here, but normally it's advisable to at least meeting grade 7 standard if piano is not your main instrument, or you are not pursuing piano performance. It's more important to be able to demonstrate your skills, interets/passion and knowledge in music in your interview/audition than just having the grade 8 cert, however.

Good luck

I agree with this. Many courses make considerable use of keyboard skills in score realisation and study. Ours had a practical exam that included short study realisation of figured bass and improvising an accompaniment to a given melody. The entry requirement was Grade 8 on something and Grade 5 on piano if that was not the something, and the students with only Grade 5 piano had to do quite a bit of catch-up.
