Hello all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif). I've been lurking around the forums here for a few days and I'm so pleased to have found adult learners. I started to play the cello a couple of years ago and I have a wonderful teacher, but all her other students are quite a bit younger than me! It's lovely to read here of so many other later starters involved in music.
I'm also planning to take flute lessons this year (though the plan does involve getting to the local music shop to pick up a list of teachers, and that seemed an awful lot easier when the trip didn't require snow shoes!). I suppose being a beginner cellist won't give me much of a headstart on the flute, but I can dream othewise (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif). |

Hello and welcome to the Forums. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Whilst playing the cello won't help you with forming an embouchure and where to place your fingers, you'll have a head start on reading rhythms and that will make a difference to the speed with which you learn the flute. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) And the music teachers website is accessible without the need for snow shoes! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Thank you for the welcome, the encouragement and the website link. I appreciate all three and I was pleased to find a couple of local teachers on the website. At least now I'll be able to make some phone calls tomorrow while I watch the snow fall (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif).

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.gif) from another adult learner, also flute! I quite agree with andante, you'll make much faster progress with one instrument already under your belt. It can be quite daunting when a Teacher's other pupils are all still at school, however I have learned that my teacher actually loves having some adult conversation even if I make slightly slower progress than some of her fast track young prodigies!! She has even been kind enough to wish that her younger pupils could copy my example of dedication and practice (not that my efforts are brilliant). But the others all seem so full of energy and promise and progress much faster than I do, which is galling. Good luck with all your musical activities! |

I'm a step closer to playing the flute! One of the teachers I called rang back tonight, so I have my first lesson arranged for tomorrow (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) . Fortunately, it's local enough that I should be able to get there whatever the weather.
Feeling a bit nervous now, though! |

Hi schraeubchen! Thanks for asking about my first lesson. It went very well (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif). I managed to get quite a nice sound from the headjoint on its own, and then from the flute, so that's a start! I did find the flute quite difficult to hold, but at least I didn't drop it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif).
I read in another thread that you play the flute too. I hope your playing is going well. |
