My son needs a new violin apparently. He has a basic one but now needs one to go up to Grade 8/diploma. What is a reasonable price to pay? what makes do you suggest?

I am no expert by all means, but I own a violin which I know is ok to grade 8+ (possibly up to diploma level) and I am happy with, it is an Otto Jos Klier 72, it came with bow and case at £700

ps, you might want to ask moderators to move your thread to the strings forum 'just in case'? but you should get enough replies on here too.

Best thing is to try some out - what grade is your son up to at the moment? My violin cost me £500 and with a revamp of new strings etc, is more than suitable for Grade 8+ - I did try out lots of violins, including some which cost £1000s but at the end, the one I chose was the most comfortable for me.

Belinda,

We recently bought our daughter, aged 12, a new violin to take her grade 7 on. (It was £350 for violin, £120 for bow, £55 for case)

What age is your son? If he is still in early teens like ours, then consider the care that they will take, if you opt for a more expensive instrument. I know there's insurance, but a practice-tantrum can be horifying to watch (she's been known to leave the bow sloping on the sofa - ready to be sat on!)
