I'm struggling to make even a thousand posts (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) It DID happen. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

The only reason you think that it didn't happen is because people all over the world put in an enormous amount of time and money to ensure that services would not be affected. (Including me.)

It's the highest unsigned integer possible working in 32 bits.

You didn't offend me Barry - sorry if I sounded a little terse. Perhaps the 'angry' smilie was a bad choice!

I just like to try to quash that particular urban myth whenever I have the opportunity.

That's OK : I go all scared and frightened every time I see the (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) smiley pointing in my direction (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I blame Channel 4 or 5 (can't remember which) which had this as no. 1 in the top 100 hoaxes!...

It is the highest number you can get with 32 ones or zeros - and a much more plausible suggestion than mine.

Quite. I think that it was Channel 5. I shouted at the TV that day.

I note the IT industry didn't make any attempt to quash the urban myth leading up to the "event".

I can think of 2 reasons:
1. There was still money to be made from those who didn't realise ('cos they hadn't been told) that it was actually all going to be fine.
2. It might all have gone t1ts up anyway.

It's a very valid question Panthera.
My experience with online retailing makes me wonder.
When you start a shop you don't want your first customers to think you have only just launched and that they are the first - you want to show a success track record both for customer reference numbers and for order numbers.
For my main retail business we started order numbering at 10,000
- so it is not impossible to do this with a forum
- but this is the ABRSM, so they will have started at o! Perhaps old posts have been archived?

This is post number 22 : it's possible most/all of the previous 21 posts vanished under the various reorganisations this forum has had over the years...

So we need to get to 999,979 to have the 1 million?

Nope : 1,000,000. In the days BBC (Before Barry Clari (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) ) there used to be separate fora for clarinet and flute, amongst other instruments, and I'd imagine there were a number of similar administrative posts attached to them that have long gone...

Erm I'm with JudithJ on this one too!! The work was put in to avoid the bug. It was avoided, project success! Saying it was a waste of time is like having the measles jab and then not getting measles and saying the jab was a waste of time.
