No hesitation in recommending something from the Gliga range; I think that they are unbeatable both for price and quality for both student and intermediate instruments, and something like the Gems 2 would be a great upgrade from your Stentor, you would find an amazing difference! Both my children have played Gligas - after starting on a tiny Stentor, my daughter played Gems violins of varying sizes until she reached full size (now has a Gama as her spare), and my son played a Gama cello up until about G7, and this is now also his 2nd instrument. Have fun choosing!

Not really its more show it to the parent and see if he's willing to pay it he knows better quality costs more

Talk to your teacher - they will know your playing best and the rate you are progressing, and so what sort of range might be a suitable next step. I'm a teacher myself and pupils often upgrade to an instrument that another pupil is moving on from (either size or standard) - perhaps yours does something similar?

It would certainly be worth having a word with Liz at Elida Trading, she can offer Gligas and Gamas, and she gives good advice. She is also a forumite. http://www.elidatrading.com

Hidersine Veracini violins are really very good for the money, comes with a bow and a case too
One of the best student violins I've seen in a while.

..or you could even go up one to a Stentor II and get some really decent strings and upgrade the bow - you'd be surprised how much different this would be to what you currently have. Zeller is the next one up after that in the Stentor range - again, with good strings and new bow, it's a decent upgrade.
For around ?300 upwards you could go for a workshop antique, you can get some lovely ones, but remember it probably wouldn't come with a bow.

Westbury? I've got the antiqued one but don't think there is much difference between the two beyond the finish. It's gorgeous (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif)

I upgraded my Stentor II to an Ashbury from Hobgoblin music in Leeds (?199).

I'm really chuffed with it, and my violin teacher at the time was really, really impressed with it. Of course, I also paid for a new set of strings (Evah Pirazzi, ?50 ish) and a new carbon fibre bow. Beautifully mellow, strong projection but also nicely bright (not sharp!) at the high end.

It's a beautiful instrument and sensibly priced, and my teacher thinks it'll take me easily to about grade 6 (should i ever get beyond 3...) with the new strings.

I played quite a few before I settled on this one (the posts are around somewhere!) and was dithering between this and a beautiful old one. However, on the blind test (i.e. the luthier played it in the next room and I wandered around listening) this one won hands down. And it's improved with playing, too. In fact, I adore it!!
