So definite practice days when we can do everything are:

Saturday and Sunday

Defintite no practice days:

Monday and Tuesday

All other days ranging from 20-40mins but lets assume 20 mins so what should I focus on in the three 20 min slots.

All two octaves

13 scales - 80% there from memory and speed
2 chromatics
3 dominants
2 diminshed
arepeggios
sight-reading
aural - is once a week enough, so at the weekend?

3 pieces of which one is purfect, two just has one problem area and three - eek!

So I need the most efficient practice and one that will help him to remember his scales, especially the chroms, dims, arps etc.

Feeling some low level tension beginning to creep up.

DS cannot practice the bassoon at all next week. The following week is half term and he will be chained to his bassoon (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) but after that he will be lucky if he has six practice sessions before his exam and he won't be able to fit everything in with each session.

I would love to find an exam that just examines pieces! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

At the moment I could do with exams/ auditions that just test scales and technical exercises. I know that my son is supposed to be doing these at the moment, but surely he needs to practise his pieces at some point? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

No! Once he's fine with his scales and tone he'll just be able to play the pieces (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Doesn't work too well the other way round though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Not to invade the parent's forum, but... what? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) I have always been used to thinking the other way around - that pieces are the primary focus, and technical work is just there to supplement and improve the pieces. I know lots of wonderful musicians who don't practice scales, etc. regularly, but none who don't practice pieces! And even in terms of exams, pieces make up most of the marks...
