Cyrilla, looks like you're working on Saturdays although I have no idea what Solfege is - sounds like a soap powder! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Sorry for the late reply - been up to my eyes in work and exhaustion this week and haven't looked at this forum for a while...

'Solfege' (should have a grave accent on the first 'e') is the name given by Kodaly educators to musicianship training using solfa (the pitch names do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti). Solfa is a brilliant tool for training pitch awareness and facility.

So...not a soap powder (but it does clean your ears out (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif) ).

I've always hated the summer term. Far too much happening in too little time.

After fighting with me for most of this term DS told me tonight that he's aiming for a distinction! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) I hope the poor soul won't care as much when we get the results in September because going by todays practice (best piece now a mess) and new reed he will get a pass. He also said he wants to sit grade 6 in December (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif) but thankfully the RCM are taking over so he has no say, and neither do I, in that matter. Phew!

In our experience exams in your first term are not the done thing. Don't be surprised if G6 doesn't appear for a while.

He doesn't even have grade 5 theory! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I have told him that they are probably going to rip apart his technique and will be doing things that may seem basic. It will be interesting to see if he becomes competitive being surrounded by more advanced students or if he will struggle. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif)

I caught Daughter trying out G6 staccato scales last night. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

She intends taking G5 theory this November so I think that means we're grade free until the Spring.

Apart from the three dance exams she's got lined up for Christmas. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Will Theory be one of his Musicianship classes then?

Isn't being competitive against the ethos of Conservatoires (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I can only speak from personal experience. First year was in some ways difficult the realisation that you aren't going to get everything you want and there are other people considerably "better" than you. Particularly coming from a supportive environment where you have been positively encouraged and given opportunities above your years.

Second year is the time to really show who you are and what you can do. Sometimes it pays off......

And, apparently, a singing exam which she and her teacher have now hatched between them. Deceitful Daughter promised when she started lessons - no singing exams before Grade 6!! Grr .... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

My mother pays for the singing lessons and all related expenses. I believe there are brave souls who have said NO to my mum - but probably never more than once. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hides.gif)

Fair enough, but as she is YOUR daughter then surely you get the final say in the matter (even if granny pays the bill) as you will know best her workload and whether it is in her best interests to take on an additional exam?
