I am so very sorry to hear this sad news. You must not in any way blame yourself. As Nigel C says, cats are very independant and we who adore them just have to accept that. I can only surmise that either he went further than usual because something intrigued him or perhaps he was chased. I assume that once in the water he couldn't get out.

One thing which may comfort you however, is that at least you found his body. We have often said that the worst thing about the two toms we lost has been never knowing what happened. But I know exactly how it tears at one's heartstrings to lose an animal that you love.

If I can offer any advice, can you bury him in you garden and put some flowers on his grave? We have done that and after a while it helps to lessen the pain. If that isn't possible can you frame a photo and put it somewhere so that you feel he is still with you in a way? We have done that too.

Can you try to think that Harry was lent to you for a while and that you loved him and made him happy
while he was with you? I can only send you and your family another (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grouphug.gif) hug

It is much too soon to think of it, I know, but one day Harry will send you another friend.

I'm so sorry to hear you news, but reasurred that you have had some comfort in getting his body back.

From your posts it sounds like you are a lovely parent and are more than aware that as well as feeling the loss yourself that your daughter will be feeling it too.

This is the time when complete cats are having kittens, so when you are ready, should you want another cat there should be many about.

You must not think of yourselves as bad cat owners because this happened. On the contrary it sounds as if you were excellent owners to Harry. Neither should you think of another cat as a replacement for Harry. Harry was his own cat and special for his own reasons. However, as the owner of two Elderly neutered gentleman cats the thought does cross my mind over what we will do when the inevitable happens and somehow I don't think we will remain cat free for long, and somehow I don't think you will either.

Very sorry to hear this, a mum. Aquarelle has said it all, really.

I lost a cat once and never discovered what happened to him - it's awful to lose them but worse not to know what happened.

Harry will be waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge - and, yes, he will send another friend for you to love.

Oh, so sorry. Yes, you will be feeling so sad just now, and missing him dreadfully. Keep hold of the happy memories you have of Harry, and cherish the time you have been blessed with him.

Very sad to hear the news. I've been hoping that your story would have a happier outcome. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) It is better to know than not to I think.

I would definitely second that - always better to know - even the worst.
I am so sorry for your loss, a mum. Take time to grieve for a beloved family member - don't let anyone make you feel guilty for mourning an animal. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family - TDM xxx

I'm really sorry to hear this. Cats will be cats and while some will be content with sitting around the house, some just want to wander and we are then faced with the choice to try and restrict this urge, or to let them go and be subject to the risks that the outside world brings.

Awful as it is, I am glad that you have at least found out what has happened. I hope you will all feel better soon.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear your news, kept checking back and hoping for a happy ending. Not much consolation at the moment I'm sure, but at least you know now, even if you might not know how it happened. The very nature of cats is their independence, which is part of what we love about them, and you can't protect them all the time. Hugs to you all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grouphug.gif)

My heart goes out to you. I have lost many dear moggies over the years but have never quite recovered from finding my beloved P.oo-Cat dead in the garden a few years ago.

You WILL get through and Harry WILL send you a new feline friend soon. Cats just do.

A mum I hope you feel supported by all the lovely words forumites have offered you. I too have been thinking about you over the last few days and am so sorry to hear the sad outcome. We have sadly lost several cats over the years all for different reasons, and I love the comment that "Harry will send you another moggie". I know it seems tough and of course it wouldn't be a replacement, no home is truly complete without a moggie, and we look forward to hearing when the moment is right for you, of a playful fluffy new arrival.
