I found this website yesterday : http://www.wfg.woodwind.org/clarinet/cl_alt_1.html

It has got lots of alternate fingerings and I am trying out different combinations for Bb. And I love the many different trill fingerings... I didn't know we could trill between Bb and C over break!

Well, I've got three pieces to make performance ready by the end of the summer, as I'm not doing any more graded exams ever, ever, ever, it is to give me something to focus on and a deadline to meet. My fingers are having fun with one the turns in the Lefevre piece, and the Rachmaninov variations are giving me major headaches at the moment, but apart from that, I'm happy with how things are going (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

What are the rest of you up to? Anyone got exams coming up or working towards session C exams?

I really like the Lefevre piece - it's such a lovely tune and I bring it out when I have a concert at short notice as it can be polised up and played to a much higher standard than Grade 5. I have to say I really don't like the Rachmaninov Variations - all I can think of is the violin version - although they do make for quite a nice technical excersize.

Scales can be as difficult as you want!! But its good to have them all under your fingers, they are really useful! Just don't take Grade 8 - the scales are a nightmare (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

I played Lefevre a few times but it didn't manage to inspire me to practice it more. I never played Rachmaninov as my teacher actively discouraged me from trying it as he doesn't like Rachmaninov's arrangements! He prefers Benny Goodman's arrangement (the only arrangement of Paganini that he likes) for Clarinet but it has so many altissimo notes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif).

I have been busy with 1st and 3rd movements of Cimarosa Oboe Concerto and they are improving. I have been asked to try 2nd and 4th movements despite my protest that they positively look Grade 8 (especially the tempi and articulation). The response was "grade is just a number, you will be surprise yourself if you give it a try"!!. Yeah right...

On the sight reading front, I bought four more grade 2-4 level books from Oxfam. I am sure my sight reading is improving, only that it's not noticeable.

I have forgotten all scales and arpeggios that I learned for Grade 5 exam. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) Time to look at them.

I am not planning to take any more exam for now. I quite enjoy playing for the sake of music. If I feel confident enough, I will go for Grade 8 in 2014 (hopefully).

Sounds like you really are improving on the sight reading front balu (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) and playing some good stuff too. Must admit to attempting bits of pieces that are way beyond me (Saint-Saens is one that springs to mind) and although I can't play them, properly, some bits do sound ok (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I tried first movement from Saint-Saens, many moons ago. But there are fiendishly fast/difficult passages at the end of the first page and top of the second page which put me off.

I might have to look at it after I finish (or abandon! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)) the current pieces I am working on.

I really like the Rachmaninov variation... Two pieces I fell for instantly were the Fresham Pond and the Spring Song (With the funny spelling (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ) The pieces in Grade 5 are quite good actually - so good that I'm having trouble choosing what to do for the exam! Not too keen on the C pieces though, the only one that I like (not love) is the Variations (But I've only looked at the ones in the selected syllabus a.k.a. the abrsm blue book.)

Forgetting your scales is the worst possible thing you could do! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
When you are working through the Grades they just get built on - you can't learn the advances ones unless you are confident with the others. I know this from experience! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)
You need to build them into your daily practice.

Been to play with my accompanist this morning.
Played a few things with some work on my Stalybridge pieces.
It would have been better if I'd actually practised the Baermann for more than about 5 minutes in the last week and also if I'd changed to a better reed a little sooner than I did. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Need to get the B12 out this afternoon and give it a blow as I'm taking my R13 in for service tomorrow and will be playing the B12 over the weekend.

You're right balu, the amount of stuff available to play now is great (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I've said before that it is so nice to be playing stuff that people recognise rather than the three or four line melodies at the lower grades. The plan for me after I've got these three pieces sorted is to look at the G7 stuff but continue to play stuff from the G6 list too.

Yes. Playing in a trio and wanted to get an idea of how the other parts fitted.
