I'm pretty sure I've asked this before but does anyone know roughly what grade the Mendelssohn clarinet sonata is? The Andante is on grade 5 list but the rest doesn't seem to be on any of the lists. Would like to have a go at the rest of it and the two Weber works in the Masterworks book.

Ask your teacher about having a go.
I had my first go at the first movement not too long after my grade 5 exam if I remember correctly.
I've worked on it again fairly recently (almost 12 months after grade 6) and managed to do more with it.
It's once again put aside as I think I'd done about as much as I'm able at this point.

Sounds about right, sbhoa : I'd put that first movement at about grade 6-7ish.

It's VERY long if you play the repeat which I did with my accompanist before leaving it for now.

I don't do repeats (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) but I blame my last teacher for that because he always said don't bother with the repeat (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Had a look at the Mendelssohn earlier, slowly and not all of it....

I have been busy with 1st and 3rd movements of Cimarosa Oboe Concerto and they are improving. I have been asked to try 2nd and 4th movements despite my protest that they positively look Grade 8 (especially the tempi and articulation). The response was "grade is just a number, you will be surprise yourself if you give it a try"!!.

Are you still working on these balu or have you moved onto something else? Hope the sight reading is still going well (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hello Louise,

I haven't been practising enough as I started playing badminton (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I have shelved Cimarosa for now. I got both Movt 1 and 3 to a good form... tried Movt 2 but there are some complex phrases (complex for me!) which put me off. I will revisit it in a few months time.

I have been playing the second movement from Krommer Concerto for 2 Clarinets. Tonight, I will be trying it with my teacher for the first time!

I also tried half page of adagio from Spohr Concerto #2. Sounds good.. but I am not ready for it now.

Sight reading is getting better. I sight read two mozart divertimenti last lesson and it sounded much better than I hoped.

And, Good luck with your mendelssohn!!

Sounds like you're having lots of fun playing new stuff (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Will have to have a listen to the Spohr, it's another one I'm not familiar with. Hope your lesson goes well balu, and thanks for your good wishes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Love the Sophr - it was high on my list for Grade 8 and will hopefully feature in my diploma recital (along with a while number of other pieces: Mozart Concerto, Weber No. 2, Crusell Concerto, etc.) I'm going to have trouble getting down to 35 mins!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I also tried half page of adagio from Spohr Concerto #2. Sounds good.. but I am not ready for it now.

Hi balu

Good to hear your clarinetting is going well!

I also got the Spohr out the other evening for the first time - it's so lovely! I think I might take this to my teacher after the Stalybridge concert.

Are you planning any further trips to Benslow?

Hello Ali-bali-bee!!

Nice to see you are active again in the Clarinet thread:). I saw few of your threads on Cello and I thought we lost you!

I didn't know it was a Grade 8 piece! I bought two CDs of Spohr Clarinet Concertos and they are all fabulous (Michael Collins). This adagio sounded easier (and mellifluous) and I thought i will give it a go...

I quite enjoyed the Benslow Wind Chamber Music course and I will have wait till 2013 to attend that (the next one in 2012 is on weekdays (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif))... I also like the idea of mixed chamber music course (wind + string + piano) but it's only for people Grade 7 and above!

Did you manage to put together a Wind Quintet?

My (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clarinet.gif) needs serviced too!

Louise - I'm doing grade 6 clarinet too! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hides.gif) You doing AB?

Hi dotted quaver, I'm not actually doing the exam, just following the AB syllabus as something for me to work towards. I did grade 3 a couple of years ago, it terrified me, no more exams for me. Will do the same with the G7 list when we get there.

Which pieces are you playing? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Sorry Louise! Just seen this. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) At the moment, I'm learning all the A pieces in the exam book and then I'll decide closer to the exam which one is best. I'm in absolutely no hurry to do grade 6. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clarinet.gif)

Hi Balu good to hear of your progress. You seem to be moving forward really quickly, if you can even attempt the Spohr already!! I must look out for a recording of Michael Collins playing it - he is such a superstar. I just love his sound. I went to a masterclass at the Royal College of Music a couple of weeks ago where he was working with some undergrads and post grads - it was fascinating!!

I haven't managed to make any progress on the Wind Quintet - I thought it would be a tall order. I am playing in a clarinet quartet and two wind bands so that's probably enough right now (as well as my cello stuff!)

I am hoping to do another Quintessential Clarinets at Benslow later in the year - so need some new repertoire for that! It's all fun!

Just come back from my lesson - spent around 90 mins on the various ornaments in my Stalybridge piece! I am beginning to regret giving myself the challenge of learning it in such a short time. It looked more straightforward on first reading!!

I absolutely love the Cimarosa (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Glad to hear someone else is playing it - I played it to a very good standard when I was 15 -16ish playing the complete work in a recital. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/clarinet.gif)

Wow!! I would love to do a Clarinet Quartet.

What are you playing at Stalybridge? Sorry, if you have posted that info in another thread..

I agree, P*P!! May be in a year's time I could get it to a decent standard and then play it at a forum event.

I was very lucky yo be invited to join but I can't fool myself - it's definitely to make up the numbers. I'm by far the least experienced player. But I'm learning a lot and they are very patient with me, thankfully!

The first movement of the Devienne Sonata in c minor. It's really lovely but is a real challenge for me. I haven't played something with so many semi quaver runs and ornaments!! I may only play the first half or do the whole thing slightly under tempo! Are you coming to Stalybridge?
