Hello

I am wondering if anyone knows about the state of the Peter Collins organ at the Turner Sims Concert hall?
I believe it was moved due to flooding but im not sure if it has been put back in!!

I am only enquiring as I am off to Southampton to study for an MA in composition. Though I am not studying performance and have no need for the organ, as an organist, I am just entrigued as to its state, condition and any possible replacements!

For my composition MA I was not required to go on an audition so did not get to ask anyone!!

Just had a quick look in "the other place" and there appears to have been no update to the report last December that it was being stored in an industrial unit near Bournemouth Airport.

I'm sure if it had been re installed someone there would have mentioned it.

I remember this organ as daughter had two Graduation ceremonies in Turner Sims , but I thought the organist at one of them was very poor. (later I found out it was eminent organist Darius Bhattawala!)
I didn't know it got flooded though.

I played it myself when I was a student there. The head of music (the indomitable Prof. Evans) seemed bemused that a CompSci undergrad was interested, but nevertheless kindly let me have a bash for an hour or two. It was the first 'Baroque' organ I had played and it seemed a strange kind of instrument to me. Ah, the ignorance of youth!

That is very arrogant of Prof Evans. There are a number of excellent mathematicians and Computer Scientists who also are good keyboard players especially organists. IMHO it goes with the mindset.

(You must remember MrB that due to my up-bringing I met lots of mathematicians, Natural Scientists an Engineers that were computer pioneers, and quite a high percentage were very decent pianists, and of those several were decent organists too. I put it down to the physics involved in sound production, the application of logic in registration, and that music and maths went together... as I kept being told!)

Not at all. He would have been well within his rights to say 'no' but he couldn't have been more accommodating!

He was/is a fine musician. I have happy memories of him also directing us in the Uni Choral Soc in various concerts with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. We did a particularly lively Verdi Requiem at the Mayflower Theatre, if I recall...

Daughter also sang Verdi Req with two other choirs in Winchester Catherdral, and without using scores.

At S'oton Uni in her time there, there was also a Jazz Choir, and Dave Brubeck visited (possibly his 70th birthday) and did a concert with them. (daughter was also Mathematician and MSc Statistics student) . I recall there were a lot of musical mathematicians at Southampton
More recently she played in the orchestra for the Verdi in Kings College Cambridge
