Title says it all really..
It's in the same place every time - about E on the A string. I can't see any funny scratchy bits on my fingerboard and I keep my nails short. I position change round there a lot, do some wild octaves between A & E string with my 1st finger sliding up and down the A string.. ..I just can't think what's causing it, but it's annoying and expensive! Help! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

you are a 'funny' one I have to say (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) (which is short for saying 'don't have a clue why it's happening (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rofl.gif)) |

Thanks mate! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
It's shredded about half an inch (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) I know I can be a bit heavy handed with my bow, but surely I can't be the cause of this too?? Actually it was reassuring to watch Midori at the Proms with hairs hanging off her bow while she played, and the little spiky 'moustache' at the top where she'd lost a bunch! I'm at least not the only one there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

I went to see Rachel Barton-Pine play the Tchaikovsky violin concerto and by the end of it she must have shredded half of her bow!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) I didn't enjoy her playing at all - it was FAR far too aggressive. Every time she had a break she was ripping the shredded bits off the top and bottom and it was very distracting. I was just kidding about feeling grown-up but that also happened just before my bow was re-haired so it was possibly already weakened. |

Mind you...with hopefully another 50 years of violin playing in front of me (if I can play up to 92 years of age that is (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rofl.gif)) I wonder if I'll maintain my record of one 'hair break' (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Help! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Might your fingerboard need shooting? It could be a bit pitted around that area, in a 'not visible to the naked eye' manner, but enough to cause a bump to your string as your finger slides up. Can't remember how much a shoot costs, but it's got to be cheaper in the long run than lots of A strings. |

Thanks KT, I'll ask him when I see him next week. I've had a good look and feel. There's nothing obvious, but I'm no expert.
Bit stumped. (bit broke too!) |

Do you have acidy fingers? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) That can damage strings.

Yes, it's because it's the same place every time I'm a bit stumped. But I mentioned it to my teacher yesterday and he says his goes in exactly the same place, and with him also it's shredding. So I blame him (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |
