When these exams first came out I took grade 1 before putting my pupils through. I got a high pass. I don't know why. I decided not to bother with them after that.

Hi There,

I'm a Jazz Piano teacher based in the midlands and I have always found the examiners fair. I have entered plenty of pupils at all levels over the years and have only returned Merits and Distinctions. I love the Jazz exams and am really hoping they add graded 6 7 and 8 in the near future.

@Alicia Ocean I wondered when you mentioned attained a high pass at grade 1 if you had any previous experience playing Jazz or Improvisation? As that is at the exams core, the written 'head' section often doesn't prove overly difficult for people at the lower levels, but the improvisation offers a wealth of opportunity to explore.

I realize most teachers are classical and then teach some Jazz. I am the other way round, I have always played Jazz and Blues and love having the chance to enter pupils for exams in these subjects.

Please ABRSM 6, 7 and 8 ASAP!!!!

Not Jazz as such but I always improvise the aural tests, and can meander on cafe-style indefinitely.
