Lucky you Maizie - and you have one more to look forward to, just like Christmas! I'm waiting for a load of music and it still hasn't come (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) - is stalking postmen a criminal offence? (I try to hide behind lamp posts, but they are thinner than I am!)

And welcome Corenfa! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.gif) Thank you for finding the courage to share that with us today. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grouphug.gif) Chappells is indeed a big challenge, and I'm sure that everyone in the group has struggled with this one!

Yeah. It's worse when you go upstairs to the piano section.

Help. My name is corenfa and I have a problem. I have just come back from Chappells. Enough said.

Is that a porterage problem (bought more than you can carry), a storage problem (bought more than you can store) or a funding problem (spent all your worldly wealth on music)?

Chappells can be the cause of all three of these problems... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

Fortunately, none of the above, I've just bought more music than I ought to have. It was the piano transcription of the Brandenburg Concertos that did it.

My problem is a backlog problem: bought more than I can reasonably hope to play/sing in a lifetime. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Oh no, my dear sponsors do help me. I have a piece of music that I genuinely need, but it's only available from one outlet and the music itself is ?1 but the postage is ?3.50 If I spend another ?19 I get delivery for free. Sure, it's more money altogether, but I get stuff in exchange for the money instead of paying a fortune just to have the music brought to me. What's a girl to do?

You find a reason not to need the music and then forget all about it.

I have things written by composers I don't even like, just because I thought I'd give them a try and I genuinely didn't think to just borrow it from the library.

I have many editions of the same piece for different fingerings/easier page turns/other editorial differences.

It takes me hours to find a piece I own but am not working on because it's all stored under my bed (the drawer has actually broken from the weight of it all) and it's too big a task to organise and shelve them.

Yeah... I have a problem >.<

Afterthought: When I die, I'll probably severely damage the sheet music sales industry for a few weeks, because my collection will probably end up in a charity shop.

Invidia I feel your pain! Could I help you sort your music out? (PM me for unique but proven system). My addiction is coupled with sheet music cataloguing OCD, and I have to catalogue everything and have it in a nice order (and yes my baked bean tins are in date order and with labels facing the front too!) I've even made my pupils catalogue their music! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) My piano teaching friend has every piece in every book on a data base in her computer - well it just sounds so sensible and organised! If a psychologist is reading this, please help us!

I have a large bookcase for storage of all my sheet music books. They are filed alphabetically and I record everything I own in a spreadsheet so I don't accidently buy an additional copy. I did have to get rid of a smaller bookcase as everything would not fit onto it.

Norway, I do have an A level in psychology, if that helps!

Violin Hero, I'm not sure whether you are just well organised or are showing the early signs of OCSMCD. (Obsessive Compulsive Sheet Music Cataloguing Disorder). Most of us started off like you - just the odd purchase of a little bit of music now and then, but it gradually became a comfort blanket to help us cope with the difficult challenges of life. We like to think that we can stop any time - but we can't!

An A Level in psychology is great - I don't have any qualification in this at all, so please feel free to suggest a remedy!

I don't think I've got early signs. I think I'm a full blown case. I have catalogued all my piano music since the beginning of the holiday and would have started on the recorder stuff today if it hadn't been too hot to move. Is there a cure?

I suppose we could have a self help group - we could do some research and come up with some coping strategies. We could even write an article for The Lancet - I bet the BMA hasn't heard of our particular disorder!

The postman delivered 3 new pieces today - all lovingly stored! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

How do people generally organise their collections, then? I'm going to have to get some new files as the music I have is spilling out of the current filing system, but I'm not sure whether to stick with the current system or rearrange a bit. At the moment it's filed primarily by instrument, I have a box for violin (overflowing) a box for recorder solo, a box for piano and vocal, a box for ensemble music of all types (basically anything with a score and parts) and a box of random mish-mash stuff like flute music, harp music, balalaika music (!) and such. Then two boxes for viola music arranged A-M and N-Z, also both crammed to the rafters. I'm wondering if alphabetical is a sensible way to arrange the viola music. Most of it is at a similar advanced level, though I do have some teaching music. Violin is reasonably well split between teaching music and playing music and I'm considering separating the two. Then perhaps I need a new section for theory papers and books on orchestration and those on music teaching...

I've got a pretty serious case, haven't I?

A grave case indeed Roserodent! PM me for explanation of my system - I've led Invidia astray already!
