Young violin cases Options

Does anyone have any experience of the 'Young' violin cases?

I'm looking for a shaped case for a full-size violin. I need a decent music pocket and rucksack straps plus an ordinary carry handle. Space for a Kuhn shoulder rest would be ideal. I need to case to be weather-proof enough for a 30+ minute walk in heavy rain (without ending up with a wet inside or soggy music). Price limit ideally ?80 including postage - could maybe stretch to ?100 if I really skimp on food for the next few weeks, but that would be the absolute, absolute maximum (so please don't point me to the Gewa cases, which are beyond my limit). It needs to be a shaped case because I'm finding that my current oblong one is totally impracticle on crowded busses and I need something which I can sit upright on my lap or squeeze in front of my legs. Sorry Flossie, I cannot help with this ----I have an oblong Gewa---very happy with it---- however I too am concerned about the (lack of) waterproofness of violin cases. I carry my case as a back-pack and decided the answer is to use a ruckcack cover. They have elasticated edges and fit over the whole of the case except the strap hooks, so even in heavy rain the case is completely dry. There is enough spare fabric in the cover to be able to hold the case by the main handle or the subway strap through the cover when going through doors, getting on and off the bus etc. They come in different sizes and I have found it needs to be "large". They are available from outdoor / walking shops (about ?10), and most are really quite thin ripstop fabric, so rollup into their own little bag, or I stash mine unfolded into half of the music pouch on top of the case, with music in the other end.

No matter how waterproof the makers claimed their case to be, I would still always use the cover-----which means most class days this winter!

This would give you a solution that fits into your 80 quid budget.

I have a piccolo case and am pleased with it - it does the job of taking a slightly oversize full-size violin and Wolf Secondo shoulder rest.

I very much like the better shaped styrofoam case from Barnes and Mullins - it has a strap inside for your shoulder rest and it will be around ?50

Thanks Liz. Does it have a music pocket? It isn't mentioned in the produc spec, but the photo looks like it might have one on top? Is this actually the same as the hildersine case mentioned above? Do you have any? I'd already looked on your website and there's no mention of cases as far as I could see. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I'm planning to go into a music shop in one of my nearest cities on Saturday (even though I hate the shop in question!) but I suspect they won't actually have anything... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Yes it has a music pocket. The "piccolo case" (no idea why they call it that) is the cheapest Hidersine one, we provide those as standard with some of our outfits, but the case I have in mind is very much nicer. I was surprised to read that the case in that link is wood reinforced, it certainly doesn't feel like it.

Just a thought, and it may be a ridiculous one so feel free to ignore! There are many cheap violins on ebay some of which are in quite reasonable cases. You could buy one in a case and give the instrument away, or keep it as a spare if good enough. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
