Thank you Tixylix for raising this issue.

It always infuriated me when the finals of BBCYMOTY were broadcast from the RNCM in Manchester, in front of (then) one of the finest organs in the country.

Sadly the Sage, a stunningly beautiful building, has no organ.

Please don't tell me that there are no young organists because that is simply not true. Organists are being taught in schools, churches and cathedrals throughout the land.

Unfortunately, because the organ is shackled to the church in most peoples mind, this colours their perception of organists in general.

I have just come back from a trip to Holland where organists, organs and organ music are held in high regard. Pity the same cannot be said for the UK.

Just out of interest - has the 'keyboard' section ever featured a keyboard instrument that wasn't the piano, such as an organ or harpsichord or electronic keyboard? And if not, why not just call it piano instead of keyboard?

Maybe no one has ever entered or got through to the category finals on a different keyboard. A quick look at the rules (such as they are) suggests organ would be allowed:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00n5j48/features/2012-rules
"Apart from pianists, organists (performers who play the electronic organ must provide their own instrument) and percussionists, you must provide your own instrument".

Mind you that page doesn't even list the categories.

Me too! Very close between the violinist (who was fab) and the cellist ...wish I'd bought tickets for the final now (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Yes I slightly favoured Juliet violinist over Laura the cellist, but both were excellent.

I'm afraid I much preferred Juliette's playing in the end, but it was not to be today. I was very put off by the Laura's constant looking round at the accompanist. I'm all for communication in the 'ensemble', but I felt this was just a bit OTT. I think that in the end, the judges may have been swayed by the age v musicality thing.

I only just got round to looking at the brass final - really chuffed to see my former student Christopher Dunn doing soooo brilliantly - loved him - and that Norwegian piece was SOMETHING ELSE!

What struck me about the strings final yesterday was two things:

A. All went to private/independent/private music specialist school

B. Id like to have the money to fly to Germany for saxophone lessons.

However the playing was superb and really can't fault the choices of the judges. I really am looking forward to next weeks category woodwind final (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Looks like a real craker.

Musicstand did wonder whether a four hour violin lesson was really necessary. Next week is the one we're really looking forward to!
